will bernies CS2 have the 3.3 raw for my Pentax as well as whatever everyone else needs or are we shooting in jpeg?

Yep - good point Shane and one that I have been considering. I know Bernie's covered as far as a multi-card reader for various camera types but I don't know about the Pentax RAW plug-in. I'm sure he'll chime in soon enough to let us know.

I suppose there are always some fallback positions - if you can shoot both JPEG+RAW, fine, or, failing that, you may just have to go JPEG.

Let's just wait 'til we hear from Mr Pix.

Thanks for the offer Tim. Just remember though that we won't have a base of operations until the shooting part of the exercise is finished so you'll be carrying things up 'til that point unless you're happy to leave it in the car.

now if i can find out the subjects i can get out and get some images into the lappy, process and enhance them and have them ready to number ... oops, did i just say that aloud

One week to go, Hunters and Shooters!

Just some confirmation of the details:

(As previously detailed in this thread)
The bus shelter at the bottom end of the city botanical gardens in Alice Street around 9.30-9.45am. Here I'll hand out the ten subjects you have to shoot and take care of other admin stuff so you can all kick off at 10.00am. (Steve - I know you're joining us around 11.00am - you've got my mobile number. Anyone else who wants the number prior to the meet please PM me)

You'll then spend the next four hours skillfully shooting your maximum of twenty shots to cover the subjects.

Finish
2.00pm - Make your way to The Coffee Club, cnr Albert and Adelaide Streets (opp CIty Hall/King George Square) where I've made a reservation upstairs for 20 from 2.15pm. It's fully licenced, with good food and a huge coffee menu. Plus the all-important powerpoints for the laptop!

We'll download the pics, have each person nominate ONE shot per category to go to 'Tribal Council' and then we'll run a secret vote, in two parts.

No participant can vote for their own images!

Firstly, everyone will score the images for each individual subject using a 1-5 scale, just like in the Challenges. In the event of a tie for first place in each category, the shots scoring equal points will be voted on again. Winning shots in each category will be posted to the forum. (As this is an activity based on observation and spontaneity, the shots will be simply resized for the web with no further PP.)

After this, participants will vote on the 10 subject winners to choose the top three shots of the day, awarding 3 points, 2 points and 1 point respectively. Hopefully this will result in the crowning of our inaugural Hunt and Shoot Winner and placegetters!

The system I've just outlined should give us a result but I'm happy to hear from anyone who may have a better method.

Question: If while participating in the Hunt & Shoot a photo opportunity presents itself which is outside the scope of the 10 subject matters and I take a pic or two will I be disqualified because my shutter count exceeds the 20 allowed? It could be a shot worth hundereds of $$$ and would be fool hardy to ignore it !

Well, I will be working now, sorry I couldnt be more definate earliar on. Unfortunately thats the way the construction industry is and the way work has been lately, you find out Friday afternoon wether your working saturday or not. Oh well at least the money is good .

Well - it's a wrap.
A beautiful day in Brisvegas saw a group of intrepid hunters gathered for this inaugural event.

Participants today were: Big Pix, CraigVTR and BabyVTR, Hash77, Big Red, GeoffM and friend Stephanie, BlacknStormy and Damian, Gecko, Mark, Jonas and Steve Griffin. We were joined at the final rendezvous by Cricketfan and Michael (Big Pix's mate up from Melbourne).

I didn't participate but I amused myself during the day by trying to get sneaky shots of the players hunting for their targets. Having changed out of my D70 polo into a more neutral shirt and also changing caps, it was fun getting in close to some of our members without them realising it. Just trying to brush up on the old tradecraft...

The downloading, collating, voting and wrap-up took longer than expected, despite Big Pix putting in a mammoth effort with his notebook (and BIG screen). Are Macs supposed to smoke like that? Thanks heaps Bernie - couldn't have done it without you.

Cricketfan kindly accepted our offer to judge the final entries and we're really grateful for his input.

As Bernie has the category winning shots on his lappy, I'll await his posting of them here.

A big thank you to Gary for allowing us to post all ten shots here.

The thing to keep in mind with these shots is that they were done under pressure. A limited amount of time, set subjects, defined location and no post processing. I reckon they did really well!!

Unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to participate in the Hunt & Shoot itself today, but I was able to make it to the social event afterwards. And it was really good fun!

Firstly, sitting back on the outside looking in, I must say that the success of the event was due in no small measure to Simon's great efforts in organising and running the day; Bernie's wonderful job collating the entries; and Simon and Bernie together who did the judging of the various topics. And of course, there were some prizes donated by Birddog. Thanks Thanh!

Ten photographic topics; defined geographical area; maximum two shots per topic; allotted time frame. Sounds easy, but I'm sure it was not. Yet the quality of the entries in terms of originality, meeting the topic, and photographic merit in this friendly competition was outstanding.

In my view, this is what a photographic community is all about. Lots of comradeship, plenty of photo fun and an opportunity to look at and learn from each other's work.

Congratulations to all who participated, special kudos to the winners, and a huge thank you to the organisers and prize donors.
