Is this fishy to anynoe else???

Postby atencati on Wed Jan 19, 2005 12:01 pm

I came across an auction for a 12-24 on ebay for a reasonablr price. In the auction the seller said he was switching to canon. I figured he would have other Nikon gear as well so I checked his other auctions. They are all the same. They are all Different High-End lenses, but the text is the same for all. They are all supposedly 1 week old. I asked for serials and he won't reply. Does this sound fishy to you? Here are the auctions in question

I specifically can't figure out why the some of the lenses are redundant ie; 3 in the same focal range? Am I being paramoid :?:

Seems a bit wierd that someone would buy a load of lenses, use them for a week and then decide to switch to Canon... Maybe the items were all listed with an automated tool, which would explain the text being the same.

I'm with you on this one though, seems a bit dodgy.

I would not even give it a second look unless he supplies serial numbers...

I think this is hard to tell Andy. I have sent people emails on eBay, had no reply, and bought OK.

He has 100% feedback and could just be what we call a nutter.

I did an web search on an American seller through his listed town and got everything including his address. He was amazed but glad I did not get his card details!!

Andy, I am notoriously cautious, however this doesn't look right on the face of it, and even if I wasn't cautious I wouldn't be too happy with it all.

If the guy is on the level, he has my apologies.

On the face of it, it does seem a bit strange to have so many high end zooms in the same range. Probably has money to burn. He has already sold an F5 body and another lens + a big heap of film.

If you reckon it seems fishy, best bet is to stay away .

Cheers

Back in the 60’s I sold some Hi Fi in London to an 18 year old who presented a Diners Club card. I had never seen the card before so phoned up to check and they said it would take 24 hours and ask the customer to come back the next day.

The next day in came the customer - I phoned Diners and they said to me ”this person can spend any amount he wants to”!

I became friends with this person for a short while and found out that he was worth £10,000,000 per year in the late 60’s - moral of story - you never know. . . .

I guess that is true as well...but I'm also looking at the source. Las Vegas. Tourist capitol of the West. I would hate to offend as well, but better safe than sorry I guess.

Sounds like a snake in the grass to me - pardon the terrible pun! But seriously how can one deck themselves out with all that top of the market in Nikon and then change to Canon on a whim? Goes against all common sense and perhaps truth to me. I'd look elsewhere. If he's a genuine lens / camera nutter and is filthy rich - why not just trade the stuff in at the camera store in one hit. If i had that sort of spending power i wouldn't bother with an eBay sale. I'm also a sucker for that 12- 24 DX though........
