The recent posts section has been extended to 20, the variable content section (Poll/ User Info/Top Posters) moved to the leftmost column, and we now have working mouseover on the recent posts, showing the full topic subject.

Enjoy ... and further comments are still welcome.

I know this idea has been asked before but haven't seen this come in force or people voluntary to add into their profiles once they join our forum.

Can we ammend the rule as:

All member has to add in their profile with their location and it's compulsory, people don't need to insert details as: Belmore, Sydney.

But can use the following:
Sydney or NSW
Melbourne or Vic
Adelaide or SA
Perth or WA.
I don't understand why people still try to hide their location and it's nice for members to recognize their fellows in the same state, region etc.., is it your real privacy concern?

Observations please.

Gary and Leigh, thanks for those changes. Thanks too for the logout point in the profile area on the front page, it is a small thing but very handy. (As the actress said to the bishop) :)

Birdy, I agree wholeheartedly. I don't know about the compulsory thing, although requests seem to have fallen on a few deaf ears. I can't see how there could be privacy issues, members have the choice of using a non-de-forum, or just their given name, and that combined with the name of a city is unlikely to amount to identifiable.

cheers

Excellent suggestion.

Mind you, I'm not going to disbar anyone who already has these priviledges but hasn't provided this information, but henceforth ...

The problem with making it a compulsory field (apart from the work on the form) is that anyone can enter anything they like, but validating it for reasonableness can be a real bear.

Case in point: I was completing an online survey yesterday, and it got to the point of the usual "any other comments" question. I had none, but the stupid bloody survey demanded an answer.

So, I gave 'em an answer. As this was for a major American corporation, I doubt they'll be impressed with the tone of my response, but the bottom line is that the demanded I give it. ;)

I've talked about this before with Dad, actually, and also working some code into the forum that, once logged in, will start a random rotation of front page logos between the original D70 Users logo and, say if it were Sydney, the D70 Users logos that were made around the Opera House and Harbour Bridge... so if a field were indicated for America... we might have the Chrysler Building or Disneyland or something (or even for Sacramento, a portrait of Arnie in vector art!), etc... we'd need to add fields for places like "Europe" and what not as a few of our members are indeed NOT in Australia.

Gary/Nnnnsic

You guys are doing a fantastic job and all for nix so you must get kind of frustrated with all these 'suggestions' which just creat more work for you.

But any way here is another one from me.

What about on the front page of the site having a photo of the week supplied by one of our members. It would be selected by you based on what you have seen on the postings that week. This might encourage people to post more pics.

The photographer would write a couple of lines about the photo and if you wanted you could say why you chose it.

Whadda ya think?
Regards

Leigh, Gary

Well done and thanks for the effort.

I agree people should be encouraged  to at least have their location in the profile.

Frustrated with the suggestions? depends upon who makes 'em. :)

Seriously, neither of us makes any claims to know what everyone else likes or wants, and it's great to get the cross-section of points of view and suggestions as to how others might think we can improve the site. Some of the suggestions make a great deal of sense; others less so.

Importantly, some are easy to implement, and where that's the case and we (or I) think they're worthwhile, we're more than happy to tak them on board.

Having said that, I kind of like this idea. Leigh, make it so!

See how easy it can be to implement some of these things? :)

Yes, that would be good (I think!).

I'm in the process of setting a (small) website up, and wouldn't mind something along those lines at some point - just to list say the last few messages or similar.

It's a piece of XML that connects to a site and relays information, usually news, back to either a site or a program.

On the home page for D70Users.com, the right hand side shows two such news feeds: one from DPReview and the other from Yahoo!.

An RSS feed for this site would probably allow you to check recent postings from either an RSS program or stream them into your site.

Scott,

You mean like this one in the merchandise section?

I think that the merchandise section is actually the more appropriate place for this, but we fully intend to add a direct email link on the front page, where the merchandise items are listed.

Hopefully that will suffice.

Not sure if this has been metioned but when i am moving from a thread back to the main page (using the link down the bottom of the page usually) the main page does not always refresh, I need to reload (in Mozilla) the page to get the info updated.

Not a big issue but tought I would mention it.

Usually when I see that - but not always - there's been another posting - since I pulled the read message screen up.

I'm don't think I'll get overly concerned about that one just now; it's another time based one, and there's lots of scope for time differnces of 1 or so minutes between boxes and the server.

Would it be too much to ask for a link at the bottom of a thread to go back to the search for new posts?
You know - where there's already a link to go back to the forum grouping or front page.

*Waves his 9 iron and a copy of the Bill Gates biography around menacingly*

That one might be a bit too much... I don't really see the room for it at the bottom, nor can I see a way to restrict it to pages that have been recently found through the "search for new posts" function.

The only way it would probably work would be a function that allowed to you to go back one step, but you have a back button on your browser or even the key combination, Alt+<-- (Left arrow), that you can use for that.

I'll discuss it with Dad, though.
