Nikkor 50mm f1.4DI've had this lens for over a year now, and I'm sure I've touted it before, but I just can't enough of it.
This lens consistently produces EXCEPTIONAL images. Unless I need the wide angle of the kits lens, or I'm shooting something cheesy like a birthday party and I want the zoom-from-chair ability , THIS lens is locked and loaded. I'm sure it's psychological, but I'm always confident I'm GOING to get GREAT pics whenever I shoot with it. The SB-800 (or brand equiv) and a good fixed focal length lens like this make the hobby soo much more fun. bla bla bla, I know. . I just love my 50 D70, 18-70 DX, Sigma 70-300 APOII, Nikkor 50mm 1.4D, SB800, Bogen 3046 w/Manfrotto 322RC2 ballhead, Lowepro Nova 2 AW
Yep, the lens is a great one, one of Nikon's classics.
but the great shots that you get with it have less to with the lens, and more to do with your capabilities with it. Sorry to put a dampener on this ... g.

the quality of the bokeh is better on the f1.4 even when stopped down to f1.8 and the quality of glass used is better, hence the price diff
Laurie, that is sometimes the reason for better bokeh, but in this case they both have seven blades. I have both and both are excellent, I would suggest if you think you will use the lower light capability buy the 1.4, if not the 1.8 is still good in low light and a great lens as well.
I'm the same, don't take mine off unless I really need to. There's something about composing with a prime lens that is just more interesting, particularly when it is a little too long for the situation. Price is an issue but I got mine from Discount Digital here in Sydney, saved over $100 and have no issues.
