Big dust in lens, should I worry?

I know that its not a big issue about having dust inside the lens, but upon receiving my new lens, I found this big spot of 'dust' particle inside the lens element, and will not go away easily.

It doesnt seem to show up in pictures (still need some more testings), but just a little bit paranoid about a new lens having this big particle inside.

It is virtually impossible not to have dust in a lens, even when it’s new. If, however, it does effect photos (which I doubt) then return it.

Remember that in any given bed there would be approximately 10-20 million bed bugs and we normally don’t worry about them, do we

Ah! The only dustless lens I've bought was my 18-55 and 70-200, the rest had some noticable specks (nothing compared to the logs in my eyes).
But when I bought my 50mm f/1.8, it came with a big black horrible looking speck. It didn't come up in the picture, but I didn't like that there - it's just uncomfortable knowing that it's there. So straight away I called up and they let me send it back for replacement
I guess that's the problem with buying by post - although I have bought a lens at the shop before without inspection - then saw dust inside, but, wasn't too much of a problem.

Anyway, if it bothers you a lot, I think you should send it back. If you can live with it, then keep it. Perhaps the next one you get will also have some specs but not as bad

when i got my 85mm out of the box new it had lots of dust particles in it
i thought to return it but just could not bear the thought of waiting weeks to get another one so i kept the thing

after many tests and looking at the results i think dust does not affect the images in a bad way

as a matter of fact mine looked very similar to yours

I was thinking the same as if I return it back, it may come back with dust as well, just another type or shape or location inside the lens.

Tho honestly, out of the many lenses I've bought, this speck should be the most noticeable and big right in the middle of the rear element group. Or it is just that the piece of glass is so big that makes it more noticeable.


I think I will have to leave it and live on with this speck, as i find my copy of this lens is tack sharp even wide open (maybe from the dust? lol)

Seriously though, is there any way a user can do anything about this, as I have one annoying spot on the inside of my kit lens which irritates me. If I couln't see it I probably would not worry. Taking the lens apart is not an option for a home user?

No, you are quite right.

If you really want to get annoyed about dirt/stains inside a lens, shine a VERY strong light into the objective and have a good look around (a slide projector works well for this) - what you will see is gauranteed to spoil your sleep for days!

If you think the dust effects your image try this....take a 200mm lens and set it to F2.8. Hold a black pencil up against the front element and take some pics of anything you like. Where did the pencil go? What will dust do to your image?

Here's a shot through 2 layers of glass and blinds 1/2 inch apart taken with a 300mm f/4



So you could attach blinds to the front of your lens and it wouldn't make much difference, so long as you dust them occasionally....
