Off Topic??? Need USB Expert and other ideas

Postby atencati on Fri Jan 21, 2005 5:48 pm

This may be off topic, not really since I am working out an idea for the d70. Is there a USB expert in the house? I am looking at a few projects out there in the works as well as some hacks in progress. What I need is some specifics in generating USB signals for testing purposes (I have very little USB experience other than some GPS Stuff). I have sniffed out and copied the signals NV sends and receives to/from the D70 when connected with a usb cable to tkae pics.

--------sign NDL here-----------

I think there is a way (maybe utilizing USB OTG) to replicate the signal the computer (NV) sends to the camera to shoot remotely. If possible, I hope to replicate the process to a small USB OTG chip for multiple uses ->read vertical shutter release here<-. Anyways, there are similar projects out there for other devices.

The first complication I ht head on is the NV writes to the harddrive when snapping pics, just have to get it to write to CF Card instead. That shouldn't be too hard to fix in firmware, just a destination issue according to my sources. You wouldn't beleive the Hakcs people have dreamed up. A few really useful, a bunch just CRAP! One guy was working on a way to make the D70 shutter lock up like the old film cameras....boy was disappointed!!!!! (read the users manual) One guy is working on GPS connectivity using USB OTG as well....Someone is working on a way to reverse enginner the metereing to function with older lenses like the D2H....much more. The'll crack this thing yet.

anyways, anyone crazy enough to give it a go???

Andy,

Grab a Pocket PC that has a host USB facility. What you're suggesting should be possible within that environment.

I have an Acer n30, and by connecting it to the D70, I can wirelessly transfer files from the camera to my laptop.

The big deal though is getting the host USB facility; there is also a Nikon API, but unfortunately it doesn't talk to Windows CE.

Good Idea gary, I have a HP Pocketpc (Windows CE) but if I can get it to communicate I shoud be able to make it leitate as welL!!!! HA! I am also going to play with my new little usb-r232 adpapter and GPs this weekend. I was encouraged last night by a little USB OTG chip I found last night. Looked like it could be used as a master usb port, smaller than a en-el3.

Still might work yet.

Andy,

I'm not sure that the HP will do the job as I don't believe that they have anny models with host facilities; only client. It's the host facility that's the key here.

Do you have a link for this USB OTG chip? I'm not familiar with it.
