R1800 - not printing?!?

Postby Geoff on Wed Sep 20, 2006 6:08 pm

I recently moved my office in the unit and since then have had terrible trouble printing - coincidence? Not sure. The printer was moved with ultra caution and didn't sustain any bumps or scratches. I have tried using it both connected to the desktop and laptop. Even updated the drivers from epson's website. It sees the printer, and spools to the printer spooler but the jobs just sit there, and sit there and...that's it. Can anyone shed any light on this? I currently have it connected via USB but have also tried with firewire, same problems.

Puzzling.

Tried unplugging from the wall for a while?

I had a problem where it would print 10 to 25% of a page (of A3+, not a cheap thing to happen). Turning computer and printer off and making sure cables were fine sorted that.

Might be silly but have you re booted your PC ?

Mine does it sometimes, when I turn it off then on again it works.

Goeff, if you wish, I am happy to drop around after work with our laptop and see if it prints from there (we have the r1800 driver installed)?

Hi Geoff

Have you tried doing a head clean to see if the computer is talking to the printer?

Are there any lights flashing on the printer?

Havent' done a head clean yet no, but there's no lights flashing - just the green power button is on (not flashing)

Haven't looked yet no.
The puzzling thing is, when I reboot the desktop machine now, it fails to see the printer, when I reboot the laptop with the printer connected it sees it.

I would turn the printer on and off if you haven't already (sure you have though). Is it the same cable as before?

Yep have turned it off and on a million times Glen. EVerytime I turn the lappy off and on it 'detects new hardware' see's the printer and wants to install the drivers, which I happily let it do, it then tells me it's happy and successfull installed - then the problem remains - the print job just sits there in the spooler and nothing happens :(

At least the laptop can see it, the desktop can't.

Are the drivers from the disc or the net? Maybe the new drivers aren't as compatible as the ones off the disc.

I am not an expert on these things, but is it possible the printer is trying to get paper from a different source (ie, you have put in A3 but have inadvertantly selected something like roll)??

Did you put in a new cartridge at all? have you removed the cartridges and place them back again?

The drivers are off the net, but I fail to understand or comprehend why they wouldn't be compatible - good suggestion though Glen, will try and find the disc/s.

You may not find what you really looking after from here, not many own this printer here.

I'd say trying to reset the print cartridges, like pulling them out and placing them back in.

And for most direct way, contact Epson Support

According to the manual:

To run a self-printer check:

1- Turn off printer and computer, then disconnect the printer's interface cable

2- Load letter-size paper in the sheet feeder

3- Hold down the paper button, then press and release the power button. Continue to hold down the paper button until the power light flashes.

4- A test page prints the printer's ROM version number and a nozzle check pattern.

- If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, interface cable, or computer, or your software may not be installed correctly.

- If the check page doesn't print, you may have a problem with your printer.

5- Turn off the printer, connect the interface cable, and turn on your printer and computer.

Ok...thanks Yi-p, it would seem that it's a software issue, as correctly suggested by Glen. Now I gotta go find the bloody disc cos it's sure as hell not working with the version I d/loaded.

And there's the problem.

Each time you do this, Windows, in its wisdom, is installing the drivers to a new logical print device.

Unfortunately, that is NOT the logical device that you think you're sending the job to.

Open up your Control Panel, Printers. How many R1800 devices do you see?

From your print dialog, you will slso be seeing those devices; you need to send the job to the correct one.
