Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AIS vs Carl Zeiss 50mm Planar T* 1.4 ZF

Postby Blackspear on Thu Sep 21, 2006 2:51 pm

From what I can see the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AIS seems to be the bees knees of the 50mm's in the Nikkor range:

and

http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html

and

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018af.htm

are there any reviews between this lens and Carl Zeiss 50mm Planar T* f/1.4 ~ I have seen the Ken Rockwell review.

Cheers :D

I think the 50 1.4 may have a few supporters here also....

Dont know about the 50 1.8 AIS but the 50 1.8d current model is good value for maney and prety sharp.

Search the Zeiss here one of our members had one you may still find some pics and feed back.

Cheers

Craig, I would place more stock in Bjorn Rorslett's reviews than Ken Rockwell's. Whilst there are home truths in what Ken says, when you are laying down hard money it is nice to have a concrete comparison.

Bjorn, as Matt says, also rates the 1.4 highly. I think you will find it hard to find comparison between the two, especially as the AIS isn't current (the version referred to is 1980). I think you would be happy with most Nikon 50mm that fit your cameras, they are all good, especially for the money.

Padey is the only member I know of who had the Zeiss.

I second Glen's tip about Bjorn Rorslett's reviews. While I never limit myself to one reviewer, I always place more weight with Bjorn's work. It hasn't let me down yet.

I don't own a 50mm so I can't comment on the lens in question.

Cheers,
Craig

Thanks everyone for the comments, the f/1.8 is a very good price at around $185 so I'm going to look at purchasing one, either new or used.
