Opinion of business name

Postby gleff on Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:05 am

I've decided to register a business name tomorrow and i'm tossing up either gleff photography or Geoff Leff Photography. As you know my website is gleff.com which is the personal site.

I'm just after opinions on which one I should choose as a preference.

I'm going to use it to try for media accreditation to events and to approach publications to perhaps sell photo's at some point.

I want something that is easy to remember, but looks big enough and professional enough to allow easy ability to apply for accreditation to various events. Would having Geoff Leff Photography make it easier or harder to achieve this?

I'm after opinions.

Thanks
Geoff

Hmmm.. to be honest, I don't really like it. In fact, i'm starting to warm towards the full Geoff Leff Photography now. I was just checking out some photo's from previous ARIA awards, and a lot of the company names were first name last name photography.

So why would you want to be the same as everyone else?? ;)

I'd go for something punny.. like Leff Right Out Photography.

That may not be to everyone's tastes :D :D

Using your own name leaves you open to abuse - in a direct fashion. I used to use Chris Russell Design so everyone knew that I was a sole trader. I then registered a Pty Ltd with the name - Dusk Till Dawn Creative. This enabled me to appear to be larger than just one person - makes helluva difference

I don't see a problem using your own name as part of the business name, although I can see how using something completely different can give the allure of "more than one person", if this is what you're after.

I personally don't know about using gleff, mainly because I think people might look at the name and wonder what gleff actually is. Using the entire name makes sense, otherwise using something that has common names/words in them tend to interest people more (IMHO).

Something like StarBright Photography (not sure if it's already taken) might suit the purpose as it kind of describes the images you'll be looking to take...

Just something else to consider perhaps...

IMHO a business name should differentiate and let you stand out from the crowd... I do not think using your own name does that... go for something snappy!

What do you intend your primary business to be? You want to pick a name along those lines... For example if you shot design type images you might High impact photography while if you shot Weddings you might go with something like (similar to Geoffs I know) Lost in the moment images

you want a name that some one can glance at in a listing or on a site and have it stick....

Thanks everyone,

I've made a decision.

In light of the fact I don't have a particular niche of photography that I do, I can't really decide on a catchy name that describes that line of business. I also understand that if someone looked at gleff photography, they'd question the gleff part.

I also noticed that the official photographer for the ARIA awards is first name, last name photography eg. like geoff leff photography. I figure using that method worked for whoever that photographer is so for the next little while at least, i'm going to go with Geoff Leff Photography with a second choice of Gleff Photography just in case.

In the worst case scenario, I can register a new name later if I get more of a niche happening.

Thanks again everyone.

Geoff

I purchased a Teddy Bear this morning for the sum of $10. I named him Mohammed. This afternoon I sold him on E-Bay for $30. My question is, "Have I made a prophet?"
