Whats your level of experience?

Hi all,

Auxillary to the posts on the "standard of assessment " topic.

In the interest of knowing more about each other, I propose we census the membership with regard to their general level of interest and experience with photography.

IMHO - we are ALL still learning how to do this stuff. Just different shoes along the same journey.

Both 3 and 4. As a pro I shoot for money and as a serious amateur have been around photography for over 45 years.

There is a major difference between shooting as a pro and being a serious amateur. For example, I know how to set up a shot and lighting for the pro shot but as a serious amateur I am like everyone else - I take bad shots, medium and great.

i would say 95(no. 3) and 5(no.4).
although i wouldn't call myself pro i do have my work submitted to motorsports magazines for image rights money. but on the other hand i am still learning on other aspects esp. studio work, close-up and artistic stuff.

I went for serious amateur.... although i have a business and do the odd wedding, i still have a lot more to learn before i would even think about labelling myself as a pro....

I have many years as an enthusiastic amateur with film. But I'm quite a newbie to digital. I'm also converted and I ain't goin' back.

I selected 'NEWBIE', but I am probably between 2 and 3 and would rather use the term 'INTERMEDIATE'. I used a film camera 'CANON FTb' for many years, so technically not 'NEWBIE' just new to digital.

Depends - Do you have a pimp?

'Pro' to me, just means that they do photography as their profession- their day job.

Of course they also have artistic 'hobby'experiments. In fact some 'amateurs' often make 'better' photos than pros as they have more time and can take bigger risks, seeing as they dont have to feed their kids by their work.

Sorry forgot about the retired pro's . I should have had a guru status for them .

I think there'll be many who don't call themselves a newbie, but could hardly say they have the "many years" bit. That said, I'm definitely a newbie even if there was an extra 2 1/2 option

But i certainly wouldnt call someone with 40-50 years experience with the harder medium of film (man focus, man exposure,film stock, darkroom ....) a newbie ! WTF?, just because theyre bringing out electric cars, doesnt mean we all have to go back on P plates or having to ride the bus does it?

Im almost sure a proper exhibition of the forums work, would get some attention (press coverage) with this level of experience. Ide say the anniversary meeting is the perfect time. We could even make a short run print of our 'own book'!

A book would be a great way of raising some money but there would be a lot of work involved!

Absolute Newbie

Strike one up for another newbie, wanting to get into some motorsport/surfing type sports photography. Can't really do too much with my A80 at the moment, but I am getting some alright results. Saving up to get a DSLR, at this rate, I should have one by 2010!

Definite newbie.

Had an old SLR and a P&S type film thing, then onto digital with another P&S and discovered I liked it, so bought a real camera! Then I started buying lenses and the future's looking poor...

Rank amateur here. Not quite as green as 12 months ago. Never really considered photography as 'art', merely just a method of recording events in my life. A visual diary so-to-speak of my travels and hobbies.
That attitude is slowly changing with the D70, but the learning curve is steep and there's still many a hill to climb!

Another newbie here - did some film photography as a kid with a canon SLR, and had a point and shoot digital before the D70, but loving the combination of digital AND SLR, can't beat it!
