D80 over exposure

Postby Ivanerrol on Mon Oct 23, 2006 12:08 am

Anyone with a new D80 have trouble with over exposure?

Mine seems to overexpose by 2 F stops.

Not really... maybe reset the settings and make sure you didn't accidentally add exposure compensation?

I have read about this problem at dpreview but don't experience it on mine...

I hope it is something easy to fix with yours though, it would just about kill me to have to send mine back and wait for its replacement...

No exposure compensation and I have reset all settings and reformatted cards. - Card is same as have used with 10,000 plus exposures on Coolpix 7900.

Have tried 18-35AF ED Nikkor, Tamron AF SP 20 - 40 F2.7, 28mm F2.8 AFD Nikon and 35 -70 F2.8 AFD Nikon all similar results.

Camera is Japanese import.

P and Matrix,
and further more I was using the settings out of the D80 to set my YashicaMat. I will have the medium format developed tommorrow, however results will take a few days.

More examples.

The first is a shot from D80 Sunday using a tripod.

The second was shot last year with the D70s handheld.

I would have expected the tripod shot on the D80 to be much better than it is.

Definitely looks like something is not quite right. I'd do a few more tests then get it looked at if necessary.

When you look at the viewfinder's meter, does the meter show any bars to the left/right side of the '0' index in the middle?

i second that, you probably have the EV +0.7 or something, i guess the key is to test shoot one or two shots first to gauge the EV before you decide to trim it ±, the sweet 2.5" LCD is priceless for double checking, although i can't really tell if my shots are spot-on focused or not from the LCD coz the zoom only goes so far in... or just use auto... its a well lit (maybe too well lit) outdoors anyway

No exposure compensation evident in the settings. I have checked this carefully.

I have googled D80 overexposure problems and it appears to be widespread.
On other forums - e.g. Nikonians, some D80 users have reported this overexposure problem to Nikon and have been asked to return their camera for investigation. Some users have even contemplated returning their D80s and upgrading to the D200.

Much speculation in the forums regarding this issue. There are some theories regarding the matrix metring engine out of the D50 that overexposes highlights. Other theories abound. With Nikon offering other users to return their D80's for investigation this doesn't bode well.

I had over $2,000.00 in my pocket when I bought the D80. I was tossing up to buy the D200 instead. I may regret the decision.

Maybe check your focal point. U might have it in the wrong place so it is metering the wrong bit. Also the D80's metering system is not as good as a D70s or even a D70. Then again, my D50 and my D80 have never had any problems.
