Picture of the Week 24.10.06

I was reviewing the last week's images, and there have been some fantastic images submitted. I have always enjoyed the honour of choosing an image for POTW but I've never found this an easy 'task'. I had no ideer which one to select, then Keith's (Firsty) image of the mum and baby deer in NZ just sang out and there was my decision!

As I've already said in the initial post here, there are so many elements to this image that are to appreciate. The composition (maybe luck played a part here but that's not the point), the lighting, and the timing make this image a cracker!! In fact Keith, if you haven't considered it, I reckon that this deserves to be enlarged and framed beautifully and hung on your wall at home with pride - what a great reminder of your trup (I mean trip) to NZ!! Keith - did you attempt to get their attention before pressing the shutter, and if so how did you do it, or did they just turn around to admire your D200? If I was going to offer any 'constructive criticism' I'd ask if you sharpened this image, and if so how much? I tend to think (when viewing it on my monitor here) it looks a TAD over sharpened. Just a thought.

Great shot, and well deserved PotW... BTW Geoff what do you mean "oversharpened"..or more to the point how can you tell from this size of pic? I am trying to learn the fine art of enough sharpening without overdoing it (if you know what I mean..)

Well done Keith and a good choice Geoff. It's a beautiful shot, worthy of both wall and magazine cover alike.

Must just be me but I don't think it's oversharpened - looks fine in all respects on my monitor.

Small point of order though: It's either Dad or big brother with the fawn. Fallow Deer stags have a pronounced Adam's Apples (as seen here) and the does don't have antlers.

The picture is just sooo brilliantly crisp and the edges appear amazingly 'zingy' (for want of a better word)...if no one else can detect it, and yes difficult to really tell on such a low res image, then fine - even better!!

Keith, a truly great capture that is just right in so many ways. Congratulations on PotW.

And no, this is not over sharpened IMHO.

Mike, when sharpening an image, you basically try to enhance the edges contained within the image to give it an appearance of being more crisp than it might appear straight from the camera.

If you take this sharpening too far, you can introduce some unwanted artefacts into the image, and the image may start to look artificially sharp, or worse: sometimes you can see some evidence of "haloing" along some of the edges.

The easiest way to see this would be to just load an image in NC or PS, and play with the settings on USM for a few minutes. Keep on playing with the numbers, and increase them, pausing between setting changes to examine the results of your handywork.

Try it with a few different images, and look at edges within each of the images to see what sort of results you're able to impart.

It is a stunning picture. The animals are well focused and looking straight into the camera as if wondering about the intentions of the photographer. A few seconds after and you can imagine them running down the slope. Congratulations, it is a picture disserving to be in National Geographic.
