I'm growing a Mo! Sponsor me? :)

Postby Geoff on Sat Oct 28, 2006 10:45 am

Hi all,

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’ll be growing a moustache. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about changing the state of men’s health.

Male health is a major issue, did you know:

Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 6 years less than females.
Every year in Australia 2,700 men die of prostate cancer – more than the number of women who die from breast cancer.
Depression affects 1 in 6 men…Most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide. Rates of suicide are more than double the national road toll.
Help me change the face of men’s health by sponsoring my mo.

Please go to http://www.movember.com.au/au/sponsor, enter my Rego number which is 5258 and your credit card details.

The money raised by Movember will be used to change the face of men's health by creating awareness and funding research into prostate cancer and male depression.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partè where I’ll be parading my Mo on the cat walk for a chance to be crowned the Man of Movember. If you want to be part of this great night you’ll have to purchase a Gala Parte ticket for $33.00 (inc GST).

More info is available at http://www.movember.com.au

I will be taking a weekly photo of my growing mo and posting it on here, I might even start a blog!?

Please note - I have asked Gary for approval to put this post up here, and he has generously agreed to it, thanks Gary.

Cheers,
Geoff

Just put my name down @ the site Geoff. Great idea. If only I didn't already have a mo I'd be signing myself up. Men's health is often overlooked.

So where is the pre Movember pic?

A great cause Geoff! :) Very true that mens health is often brushed under the carpet compared to womens health, embarrassing as it is gettin a prostate check is very important.
I'll donate once the website maintenance is finished.

Great work Bernie!

Gary - I know how you like a challenge... I'd love to see what other ideas people can come up with.

Thanks to those who have very kindly donated so far - it's very much appreciated and it's going to a great cause.

Geoff and I are very happy to help relieve you of that extra weight in your wallet and, let's face it, the donation you make now may well go towards saving your own life one day, or the life of a family member or friend.

Hi Guys!
You are doing a good job and congratulations to you on pushing the issue of men's health.
I have passed on a donation to your worth while cause and wish you great success in this venture.
Men have a great deal of trouble going to the doctor and having check ups or in even admitting that there could be a problem in the first place.
I have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be going in for an operation to have my prostate removed in two weeks time.
This is usually an older man's illness and I could have waited and not have had any tests done for another couple of years when maybe I was starting to get symptoms, but in all likelyhood, it would have been far too late. I am 41 and one of the youngest pateints my doctor has treated.
We need to stop being such babies in this area of our lives and take some responsibility, even if it means unpleasant tests and the fear of losing some of our masculinity - better that, than dead!

Arek - we all wish you the best for your upcoming surgery. It just goes to show how widespread the problem is when one of our own is so closely involved. I'm only a year older than you and it's a real wake-up call to find out that prostate cancer can strike guys of our age.

Thanks so much for the contribution.

I just checked the latest figures - Australia has just under 29,000 registered MoBros and has raised nearly $650,000!!! We lead the world in registrations and money raised so let's keep the ball rolling.

As far as "State of MO-rigin" is concerned, NSW is whacking the other states with more than $330,000 raised, followed by Victoria with $174,000 and Queensland on $63,000. A terrific job only 4 days into the event.
Only 26 to go so let's see if we can get this total well into the millions!

Stay tuned for a progress shot tomorrow night - I'm looking forward to seeing one from you too Geoff (Bet you're bushier than me!!)

p.s. being fair haired, it's gonna take a few more days to be able to actually see my mo ... a photo will come. Even if it's towards the end of movember!

Arek

Good to hear you had the problem diagnosed and are having it seen to. 41 is bloody early for such problems but like you say early diagnosis is best. Good luck with both the operation and the recuperation.

geez, you guys go all out for a simple photo of the mo ...

I'm looking like a World War 1 british fighter pilot (tally ho chaps, jolly good banter here!), but being blonde, my mo has a chameleon effect.

People have suggested trying a liberal application of texta, and failing that, mascara.
