Chris,

The increase in the number of members is quite amazing.

I suspect that the number of "guests" is actually being inflated by those who are using the rss feed; that's why I disabled it for a little while, but the results that disabling it gave me were not at all conclusive.

I may have to find some way to distinguish the rss feed recipients from the guests so that we can get a better feel for who's doing what.

All the guests are showing different and varied IP addresses.

I would need to try to cross-reference those IPs against those from which members have posted to try to confirm this, or else set the TTL on the pages to a ludicrously low level to force them to refresh their source more frequently.

What I just did was rename the page for about 45 minutes, but whilstever a client is using the file from their cache, I'm not going to be seeing any changes here.

And yet still no metatags.

However, if that was the number of guests on the server and it isn't RSS related, we're going to have to move to a better connection very soon.

Another point of interest is that, despite the load that this traffic should be putting on the server and connection, it seems (to me) to be holding up quit well.

Again, that kind of points to the load being rss related, as the rss get will be very low volume in terms of total bytes transmitted.

You know, if it were RSS related, I'd expect I'd be able to see that the guests were looking over the "new posts" or something like that.

When the number fluctuates again, we'll have to see what the guests are doing to see if that is indeed coming from a RSS related issue.

I thought about that too, but I don't think so. The queries being returned are the 15 most recent topics, and I suspect that the lattermost of those is what's being reported.

We can certainly try a small test of that from home later today.

I've just added a couple of minor changes to the code that lets me see who is on an RSS feed. When I just checked, there were 7 guests reporting RSS feed as their page ...

I suspect I may have been correct, but only time will tell.

Well I had 2 RSS feeds running... One at home and one at work... However, they are both set to only update on an hourly basis... Would I still show up as a guest between those updates??
Cheers, John

The session remains alive for about 5 minutes, so no.

And while I have to support your decision to update on an hourly basis, I'm wondering how many messages you're missing. The feed provides the 15 most recent messages, and during busy times you might be underfeeding yourself and thus missing some messages.

Aha... that would explain why I kept seeing replies, but not always the original message... I may have to reduce the update timing then... (sorry)
