News also out on dpreview now for the D40, SB-400 and 18-55 II

Hmm... something new again but does not appeal to me at all... I'm looking forward for a D90 early 2007
Edit: After reading the full preview, Im amazed on how Nikon has made this DSLR. The first SLR in Nikon history to be 'dummy friendly'... Or this is THE 'DSLR for dummies'... no offence, but its not that I dont like their innovation and interface, but they've seen to pushed it too far to be Nikon SLR type again... More of a smart-ass P&S to me, tho im very impressed on how easy they can make an SLR to be operated. Bravo Nikon, you've got the consumer market for those who want a 'real good quality' camera...
The F50 was dummy friendly.

The information display formatting is a brilliant idea on the part of Nikon for people looking for something so user-friendly they can decorate it... which I imagine the average person wanting a slightly more advanced camera that still "speaks" to them would probably want...

At least they didnt include a LCD with information display on all those nice looking graphics...
now all i need to decide is if I get a D40 so that my wife doesnt borrow my D80, or a 400D so she doesnt borrow my lenses either

Has any one tried one of these?
I'm thinking of buying one as a gift, for someone who has never owned an SLR, but has wonderful "eye" for color, composition, and moments. Its in budget, and I think with the 2.5" screen, and small size for small hands, will suit well. Just wondering if anyone has done a review on this? Or checked one out?
Very new OZ but there is a preview of a production model on DPreview: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond40/
I would guess it would be good for someone as you describe who will just use the kit lens and maybe one other lens. You said small hands, so I am thinking female, many (not all) females dont seem to become gear obsessed like us males, so maybe no AF lenses wont be a problem
I think that I will eventually get one of these D40's as my wife would be happy to just leave the kit lens on it...

OK so now when Nikon Australia say that they will release a camera in Australia in December, they mean that it will be for sale and in stores on the FIRST OF DECEMBER!! ??? EDIT: Teds in the city, and Bentleys at indooroopilly have "heaps" in stock - I just rang them! Good riddance to Maxwell I say - tis nice that stock is available on release date! Ted's Melbourne said they had 10 in their first shipment and dont expect them to last the weekend...
I must say, they are very small. SHould get more to to give feedback over weekend.
Went to Foto Riesel yesterday, they had the D40 next to the D2X, oh God, that is TINY!!! about 1/4 size of a D2x... 3/4 of a D50...
would be perfect for a little 35mm f/2, but oh , hang on, you can't use that lens on it... or any other Nikon prime...
