Christmas Present: Nikkor lens

Postby joey on Mon Dec 18, 2006 7:40 pm

I want to get myself wide-angle Nikkor for Christmas present.
If I could afford 17-35mm, I would have bought this lens but it's out of my budget. Instead, I decided to buy a 35mm AF-D F/2 fixed focal length lens.
Is this a good lens? :)

Yes it is. I have one and very happy. Maybe you could buy the 17-35 for me with the money you are saving on yourself?

Okay, I am almost convinced. :)
What left is to find a good dealer.
Thanks!

Hmm... by all accounts, the 35/2 IS a very good lens, however I wouldn't exactly call it a wide angle lens, not for a 1.5 crop digital body.

How about a 20/2.8 or the Tokina 12-24?

The 35/2 is not exactly wide angle on the DX body.

It is very close to the traditional 50mm in old film days and very pleasant to use. Very sharp and contrasty colours, lovely lens in all.

For the sake of following old conventions I'd call it wide-angle.But we can call it DX standard angle lens in this discussion too.

I am using film Nikon camera too. I think 35mm is suitable. :)

Ah! I always fall into the trap of assuming everyone on dslrusers is a DLSR user :) No worries then, 35mm will work beautifully ;)

I love mine, it allows me to slip my d200 in a large pocket on a trip out. Very sharp and easy to carry.

Why not look for a pre-loved 24mm Nikkor? Wider than the 35, the 24 f/2.8 used to be my favourite lens on my film bodies.

I will check reviews and sample pictures for this lens.

Thanks!

Review from this site:

http://photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nik ... /index.htm

Verdict
The Nikkor AF 24mm f/2.8D didn't really convince during the tests due to various shortcomings. The resolution figures were generally very decent but otherwise the lens left something to be desired for a fix-focal with relatively high barrel distortions, very high vignetting at f/2.8 and very pronounced CAs. Spherical aberrations (focus shifts when stopping down) on top don't make things any better. So despite the relatively ambitious design (floating elements) the lens doesn't seem to be overly attractive anymore. This doesn't mean that the AF 24mm f/2.8D is a bad lens, it's not, but fix-focals should perform better than good zoom lenses.
