Portrait of Natasha w/ 50mm 1.8here are some photos from yesterday's portrait session. It was my first with an female adult, enjoy.
1. 2. 3. 4. genji
All good shots - but the last one is the winner for me.
All your shots evok some emotion - this is great in portrait work. The emotion in the last shot wins hands down IMHO. I also like the composition in the last shot - it has foreground, middle ground and background. Well done. Craig

I think you have shown the power of portraits - a portrait can portray the inner soul of the subject and of your 4 photos number 4 is my favourite Chris Chris

for me thats what portraiture work is about, understanding your subject and showing her personality in the photographs. My aim is to excel in location portraiture work. genji
Great shots and a fantastic first attempt at a female model shoot. She is a very photogenic lady too.
However, even though i do like your photos i would like to add a little bit of constructive criticism. Have another look at your pics and see if you could have been able to improve the lighting. Pic 1. Is very nice and moody, but i feel that the shadow on her back is a little bit distracting and perhaps a closer crop of the right hand side would be nicer too. Your model has a great candid expression and you've captured that well, but less background can put more focus on her face, which is the centre of the subject. Pic 2. Is very good. I love the composition of this one. Your model has a very honest smile and this angle captures it well. But i do believe it needs a bit more light as her hair is very dark. But still it's a great shot. Pic 3. Has much better lighting and in fact i think it is near perfect, but i think the composition is a bit awry. Maybe she is leaning to far across the image and not leaving enough room on the right to allow her gaze to exit the image enough. Once again your model has a great expression. Pic 4. Fantastic, love it. Really good composition and i think this pic shows that you do have an eye for a good shot. Maybe just a little bit dark around the top left of her head, but it is still very artistic the way it is. All round. I think that you have the making of a portrait photographer. You've certainly got a good eye for composition, which i believe is what makes or breaks a photo (or any type of picture). Keep up the great work and i look forward to seeing more of your work. Well done. (Bear in mind that the comments above are my own opinion.) Steve.

yep... 2nd and last..
Question time! Do you know this girl? How did you go getting her to emote? Was she a fairly outgoing person to begin with or did you need to "work her"? How posed were the shots? did you just let her do what she wanted or did you set up the poses and say "look happy, look thoughfull" ( *austin voice* yeah baby yeah */austin voice*) New page

I think that the reason most love 2 and 4 the best is the light on her face bring her out from the background. #3 and #1don't seem to have this dimensionality, #1 has great color but the shadow on her back and lack of texture in the sky make it a little flat. #3 the light doesn't bring her out from the background quite as well.
I agree with the others that this is an impressive first attempt or even for your fifth attempt, and all four are pictures you can be proud of. Terrific job.
1. the sun was setting fast behind me, i was standing in front of her, I have other photos, but did not like them. Location as at a skate park. 2. I agree and also her face complexion is wrong. 3. thats what happens when no posing is involved, u have to be able to anticipate and be at the right place, I was slightly out of place! 4. she was sitting on a large chess table.
lol, was wondering when the questions would start!! Friend of a friend, got my girlfriend to talk to natasha, told her it would 'natural' no pose photography, Dont know her that well, but we talked about things that made everybody laught. it started with public BBq's, both girls agreed that they dont eat from them, 'cause of incidents of men they saw pissing on them... asked her to sit on table, stand hands on hip, etc nothing special. asked to look towards me, look away etc I would just move around her to get the shot. had some other shots but aint going to show them!! cheers
yeah, next time going to get a reflector, used a car windscreen reflectors, those with the foil. If I have money I'll invest in a proper reflector. Thanks for the contructive critique! I am going to process them in a different way, give the photos a different 'mood', will post to show. thanks again!!
