Picture of the year 2006

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

Picture of the year 2006

Postby stubbsy on Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:08 am

The mods are having a break from Picture of the week during the Christmas New Year week and instead featuring your choice as the best picture from the POTY selections of the past year.

So without further ado, here is Poon's incredibly powerful winning image taken during the World Trade Organisation meeting in Hong Kong just over a year ago.

Details of all POTY voting and the nominees can be found HERE

The mods and key members wish you and those close to you a safe and happy time during the festive season.

It is the menace apparent in this shot that makes it such a standout. The almost monochromatic tones with the bold white "Police" signs on the helmets certainly indicate a degree of menace to me.

I also like the close-up viewpoint, and the panoramic treatment of the image adds to its power.

Since Poon won the POTY, do you think he should celebrate by giving away a 18-200mm VR to all D50 owners?

Is that because your shield is too heavy or your helmet too tight? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

That is a seriously confronting image, any photojournalist would be very proud of it.

Well done Poon, great PotY.

Great choice of POTY, and sure this is a very strong image, no wonder how it sold out as one of firsts in Melbourne :D
