Nikkor 20-35 f2.8

Postby Alex on Thu Dec 28, 2006 9:32 am

Just wondering about the value of Nikkor 20-35 f2.8. Is this a good lens. I found a retailer that holds a 2nd hand one in excellent condition for $1200. Is it worth it?

Thanks
Alex

It's not a bad lens but seems a tad overpriced to me. There's a Sydney dealer (E.C.S.) who currently have one on sale in excellent condition for $950.

I used to be indecisive..but now I'm not so sure.

Hmmm. Thanks Bob! $950 is a nice price. Unfortunately, I'm in Melbourne.

Hi Alex,
At $1200 you are very close to a brand new 17-35/2.8. I'm sure you have considered this.

I have not checked specs, but no doubt, there are benefits, like faster and quieter focus, a little wider, warranty?

I am so happy with my 28-70, I wouldnt hesitate to get the 17-35 (assuming similar quality characteristics).

Also not far from a 17-55DX...

Re the 20-35, if in SYD, I'm sure one of the members could check it out for you?

Sorry, not much help on your price question, but just throught I'd comment on possible alternatives, new for perhaps $300 more.

cheers,
Oz

Hi Alex,

as Bruce has said, there's not much difference in the price you can get a new 17-35 2.8 for. The 17-35 2.8 has a reputation for being like the 28-70 2.8, a classic Nikon must have lens. I'd go a little more and get a new 17-35 2.8.

Cheers

Just an update on this. They are happy to drop the price to $995 now after I mentioned the price in Sydney and are willing to give a $245 trade in on my kit 18-70 lens.

Still thinking..

The 20-30mm is an excellent general purpose lens for Nikon digital SLR cameras. It's a sharp, fast lens and the focal range is very useful. This was a pricey lens when new so any price under 1K is a good price.

Thanks Bruce. The lens is built like a tank and bloody awesome. Only issue for me is that range is a tad short 20-35 for some of the stuff I do, but coupled with a 35-70 2.8 might be a great kit as well.
