Bird ID - Help Needed

Postby Alpha_7 on Wed Jan 17, 2007 10:46 am

Hi Everyone,

I need some help from one of the many bird lovers on here, my mum and I checked all our books and couldn't find a bird that looked enough like this bloke to give a positive ID. I can post another pic if need be, but I only pretty much got him front on.

Thanks,
Craig

Craig,

It looks like a grass parrot to me. Could be wrong though. Any other pics?

Cheers, Mick

Craig - The only bird I can find in my bird books that looks close to this is "Cloncurry Ringneck", although I couldn't be certain that this is one.

Nice pic too btw, shame about the cage though.

Craig,

The grass parrot is also known as the Turquoise parrot - try that one too.

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

I've added other photo, thanks for the replies. I'm sorry I didn't get one from the back, or look at the sign on the cage to ID it.

Hi Mick - The Turquoise Parrot male has deep blue on the outer wing, light blue over most of inner wing, and shoulder patches of red. The female lacks the red band and has a smaller size turquoise face mask with white lores, which run from the top of the beak to the eyes.

So as this bird dosen't show white lores it's not a female Turquoise Parrot.

Craig - Did the bird have any red on the wing? If it did then perhaps Mick's ID is correct.

I didn't see any red, but I can't be sure sorry. I can get my mum to visit Birdland again and find out, but I'm not sure when she'll be free.

Hey guys - I'm pretty sure it's a Red-rumped parrot ... Psephotus haematonotus. It is also known as a grass parrot, same as the turquoise - that's the problem with using common names - the same name can apply to a number of different species :(

Looks like a scraggy male (maybe an immature coming into adult plumage) - if you get your mum to look at the back, it would have a red patch at the base of the tail on the back.

let me know if I'm right :)

Rel

Craig,

Try this website - there are a few shots in there (could be the red-rumped grass parrot).
