Country Music

Postby Mal on Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:26 pm

OK so we have Nikon and Canon users
We have those who love coffee and those who just drink it
BUT what I really want to know is, how many DSLRusers are Country Music Fans

WHY?

Well sitting at home tonight I was doing channel surfing. Flicking between the stations I came across the Country Music Channel (yes I have Foxtel, a job perk!)
In the past I just cruised on by, but tonight I have been glued to it. I think I am becoming a country music fan!!!
So what I want to know is……

Are you a fan or do you give country music the pan?

there's so much variety within 'country music' ... I like some of it, loathe most of it.

and on that, I'm thinking of the scene based around Bob's Country Bunker in the Blues Brothers..

Elwood: Ah... what kind of music do you usually have here?
Claire: Oh we got both kinds. We got Country AND Western.

That scene reminds me of some pubs I've visited in regional NSW!

I like country that isn't cheesy, and where the performers don't wear the hat and the boots. Hard to find, but it exists ;)

On average, the level of musicianship is much higher in country than in rock, which surprised me when I first realised it.

Plus country tends to have a heavy emphasis on melody, which is what I love most about music.

Most of my large collection is rock / alternative, but some of my favourite CDs belong right in the country genre - Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, Hellecasters etc.

I really like Ryan Adams ... not the Canadian dude who sang 'everything I do, I do it for you', but a country/rock guy from the states.

I think it depends on the country music for me.

If it's the generic country-pop, I'll listen to it as much as regular trashy pop and assume it was written for the teeny-bopper equivalent in the country-world... but if it's good country, I'll listen to it.

I like some good country, delta, folk... provided it's not junk.

I don't mind a bit of bluegrass, and dirt music. Watch 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' for an idea. And I reckon the waifs are cool. Especially 'lighthouse man'.

Don Williams is the man, it reminds me of sunday mornings with my parents when I was young. I don't know much apart form that, I wish I did as when we used to visit my uncle he always listened to country in his smokey kitchen. Happy days :)

For now I listen mostly to Springsteen and Sinatra.

I love a sunburnt country,
My favourite kind of tree.

If we're talking about real country music, then yes, it's good stuff. Patsy Cline is particularly good.

Western swing probably fits in here too, and if you'd yet made your acquaintance with this genre, I'd strongly recommend you do so.

Much of the modern stuff is really just rock music sung with a nasal twang, y'all, and as such it's very formulaic. And too often just crap.

Des made mention of the quality of the musicianship: in this regard, when you're talking about the top eschelons of musos, it doesn't matter whether they're playing rock, pop, or country ...

or jazz.

The top guys are musicians of the highest order, and are well capable of playing with the best in any genre.

And this is for those who think "Achey Breaky Heart" is good music.

Country and Music - what an odd pairing. If we are talking about all that nasally stuff about trucks and lost loves with wailing geetars then it ain't music. Everything else "country" is really just stolen from rock or pop to try and make money for the country music stars.

Needless to say I answered with a no

Good music is good music - whatever the genre.

Unfortunately the nasal twang thing can really annoy me - which can really ruin a good song.

It's all about the music - so if you like it, enjoy it.

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

One of my ex's exposed me to Garth Brooks, but other than that, country music has been limited to only the comically funny tracks from the radio station soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto series of games.

I'd much prefer the 'fake' country music... those that have crossed over to/from pop/rock.

It doesn't float my boat, or ride my horse, or brand my steer, or wear my spurs, or cook my beans, or Keith my Urban, so i don't listen to it.

Frankly i feel that far too many Aussie country singers try to emulate the mid-west American style and not be who they really are, Aussies!!

RIP Slim Dusty, the only true Aussie country singer. I would have had a beer with that bloke any day.
