HELP !!! Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG

Postby neilk on Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:00 pm

Hello guys

Thanks for you time

Lens : Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG

Anyone had a look at these for a D80, anyone got any opinions on this lense.

I currently have the 18-135mm, so this should suit fine. But, if it is an ordinary lense, probably not going to look at purchasing it.

Penny for anyone's thoughts !

For our thoughts to be useful, we need to understand your needs...

what do you currently have in your kit? Or is this a start out?

What do you like to take pictures of, and what do you plan to use this lens for? (describe subjects, conditions, lighting, motion).

If general purpose, what do you "normally" use the camera for?

different tools work differently for each job.

tell us more, and we can let you know what we think?

I currently have D80 with a 18-135mm only at the moment.

Id ideally like to take photos of wildlife with this lense, cows, birds, etc. Mainly taken during the day, probably a bit of night photography if the shot is there.

Anything else, let me know

We've only just bought this one and have only taken a very few shots: hope to do something next weekend. First impression is that it is disappointing soft at 400. But I'd like to give it a better chance before being too critical. The shots taken were on a D50 - will try it on D70 and also the D40 (manual focus only) and post a couple of examples after the weekend - good or bad. (Sorry, no D80 to test it on).
Edit to add: we've been hoping to get something of McNaught with it, but all out attempts have been 'clouded out', will persevere.
