World's biggest photo

Postby skippy on Sat Jan 29, 2005 1:29 am

Holy crap.

Saw this in the Jan 2005 DCMag, and had to share. Figured Dutch wasn't the strong suit of too many people here, so I'm posting a few details from the story.

A team from TNO in Holland has stitched 600 images together to create the world's largest panorama taken from a fixed point. A few details:

    • 78,897 x 31,565 pixel (2.5 gigapixel!)
    • 7.5GB
    • D1x
    • Nikkor 80-400 zoom
    • Manfrotto 755B tripod
    • Camera Turret Company Digital PT20 pan and tilt head.
    • Lens was set to full zoom.
    • Files were taken as RAW written directly to PC via Firewire.
    • Panorama Tools 2.6 handled lens deformations
    • Put together with PTAssembler
    • Printed at 300dpi the photo would be 6.67m x 2.67m:shock:

Anyone got anything to compete? Sydney Harbour would look good at this level of detail. Think how much Ken Duncan could charge for it! :D

hmmm..maybe I'm crazy but>

there is a post around here (can't find it) about a surveilence cam that could zoom to something like 2 miles? We all had a look at it a while back, there was talk of use on the aussie beaches for security, etc etc. Anyways, Isn't this the same pic??? I swear that is the same church in the middle....I am starting to question my sanity. Anyone remember that thread??

yep, the very same.

It just goes to show magazines are not able to keep up with internet forums such as this, when talking about new stuff. :) By the time it gets into print, those in the know already read, discussed, abused, and moved on to the next big thing.

I love what the team has done, but i wish they had picked a nicer view.

I've just finished one from my visit to Mt Isa this week, and I thought that was an effort with 19 photos stiched together.
