Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 announced

Postby DaveB on Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:45 pm

As I noted in a different thread, Adobe has announced details of Lightroom 1.0. It'll be available from Feb 19 2007, and the next update to Adobe Camera Raw will be available then also.

No word yet on pricing from Adobe Australia, but the US price will be US$299 (US$199 introductory price until the end of April). There are academic discounts also.

Now that the official announcement has been made I'm allowed to answer questions about the details of 1.0 (I'm in the pre-release testing program). It's quite a bit different from the last public beta (B4.1) and Uwe Steinmueller over at Digital Outback Photo has an overview to get you started.
The beta of ACR 3.7 doesn't look a whole lot different from 3.6 so far (whereas the ACR 4.0 you see in the CS3 beta is more-similar to Lightroom's controls) but at least it brings over the results of your LR modifications, making interoperation between CS2/ACR and LR reasonable.

As big pix pointed out elsewhere, Adobe Australia list it at AU$345. They mention AU$150 discount for early purchasers, which will bring it to AU$195. Not bad!

Photoshop Lightroom beta 4.1 build expires on February 28, 2007.

Damn... I just know Ill have to buy it, been using it for all my RAW conversion recently - beta version. Good to hear its at a good price!

If the next ACR is available then too, does this mean CS3 is also available?

The public CS3 beta (which if you have a licence for CS2 you can download and experiment with) includes ACR 4.0.
ACR 3.7 will be released at the same time as Lightroom, and it adds a couple of new cameras and compatibility with Lightroom 1.0. It's used by PSE 3/4/5 and CS2 (just as ACR 2.x is used by CS, and ACR 1.x was for PS7).
The ACR 3.7 window looks very slightly different to 3.6, but only in things like the shape of the tab edges/etc in the UI (looks like the graphics libraries were updated, at least in the beta). From an operation p.o.v. it seems identical to 3.6, whereas the ACR 4.0 window has a whole new set of controls.

The non-beta CS3 and ACR 4.x release will come a little later, but there are no published dates yet.

I am not sure, but I think that the Australian price $345 boxed / $315 download includes the $150 discount.

The US store's price is set to $199 on the site itself.

might email them and see if I can find out more info :?

Trial versions are typically made available at the same time as purchaseable products.

The only publicly-available version of Lightroom at the moment is Beta4.1, although a lot of things have changed since it was produced in October.
There are a few resources out on the net of tutorials/etc being produced from the pre-release copies of 1.0 (those copies are only available to people in the official pre-release testing program). I don't have time to give you a full run-down, but if you have specific questions about functionality I can check them out.

Otherwise you'll just have to wait 3 weeks...

A trial version of lightroom... :)

I'd tried 3 different betas of lightroom, and the interface was ok, it was hellishly slow in every aspect... and my pc is no slouch either...

Rather than forking out my hard earned, i'd prefer to try an official release to see if the speed issue is gone... :)

It's hard to give you specifics, but I can assure you that the performance of the latest release candidate is great! It's certainly changed a lot from the public betas (which probably didn't even have the compiler optimisation turned on).

I'm running it on a single-core laptop CPU at the moment, and while I know it would go faster if I had dual-core (it does lots of things in the background for you) it's an acceptable speed as is.

so I just wasted my money buying the AMD 64x2 duel core 5000+ so I could run lightroom :)

the one thing that I was missing was snapshots so I could keep different edits of the same file... in now YES!!!

I'm moving over from rawshooter pro so I get lightroom 1.0 free... a bigger YES!!!

I can't wait

Sadly, you're right. $345/$315 it is...
Again the AU prices are artificially inflated over the US price (even accounting for GST). It's not as though they have to account for different shipping for the download product!

Well I sent adobe an email with a few questions regarding the pricing and if there are any restrictions on the US download version.

I'll let you all know what they have to say if I ever hear back from them.

You can't purchase from the US Adobe store unless you have a credit card with a billing address in North America...

Yep, I've even cloned out whole birds from some shots with it (ok, so they weren't dust spots, but the same tools work).

1.0 is great.
I am using the trial until i can decide if its worth buying.
I like all the extra tools and the speed increase is great.
I no longer get the spinning beach ball for 20 seconds when cropping.
I still dont like the customization-ability if that makes sense. I want to be able to change how things are cropped, and i think the edge panels should be able to be changed how they are made visible. I found that if you hold alt or command or something it gives you a list of three options, but this isnt what i am after.
The History section is great! as is the filter by meta-data, very cool.
the dust feature is cool. i haven't tried the red eye yet, but i am hoping i never will.
Like Dave I've cloned/healed imperfections in the picture that isnt obviously dust.
Also how does the non-destructive feature work?
the one feature i am looking for/hoping for is to be able to copy a photo so i can create different post processing (B&W/Sepia etc). what i am doing at the moment is converting to B&W and then exporting the photo with B&W at the end of the file name, then undoing the convert to B&W and then performing another PP.

sorry for the long post. Lightroom is just so great ;)

The function you want is to create a Virtual Copy.
Right-click on the image in Grid mode and you'll see it in the list (or it's in the menus).

The panels can obviously be hidden by the triangles at the edges of the frame, but what might not be obvious is that Tab hides/shows both the side panels in one hit. What functionality are you after?

the feature is there, it's called "snapshot" and is just above the history heading
just click the + sign and give it a name, you can store as many snapshots as you like and as you mouse over the list (includes the original) the preview at the top will change to show the snapshot, clicking will change the main image to the snapshot
crops are recorded too so you can save different crops :)

this was the main feature that I was missing in the beta

as for cropping you can now draw your own crop as per PS2 and the padlock icon constrains and un-constrains the aspect ratio or you can use the presets in the drop down list.

here is my list of must visit sites re lightroom
the first one is the best
hint: as soon as the videos start pause them and let them download in the background then view them as lots of people are using them and they stop and start a lot :)

Keith, Snapshots in the history of an image are slightly different to Virtual Copies (which have their own history).
If you want both conversions in your library (e.g. colour & mono) then you want to use a VC. Snapshots are useful when experimenting with an image to let you easily go back multiple steps. Having to select the appropriate snapshot each time you want to use the image would not be very sensible.
