Transfering Raw+Basic to computer in PTP mode

I used to use the USP in Mass Storage mode, but have tried out Camer Control Pro & love it.
To use it though, I need to have the camera in PTP mode.
This causes an unfortunate side effect.
When I transfer images from the Camera to the Computer, Images taken in RAW+Basic come across as JPeg only(two copies). Photos taken as RAW only come across as NEFs. Photos taken as JPG only come across as JPG. So no problems there
Camera : D70s
Computer WinXP SP2 + all security patches
Transfer mode: Windows Explorer. It sees the camera as a camera, not a Drive, and the NEFs taken with a JPG appear as a second JPG with the same name!

What am I (or MS!) doing wrong? and how do I resolve it?
It would be nice If I can leave the camera in PTP mode, and I like RAW + Basic as I keep the NEF as a "negative", but can send/view the JPG immediately if it does not need any work done on it.

You're transferring files directly from the camera.

If you're using NCC to shoot and send the images directly, then fine; they should come accross based upon the mode that you're shooting in.

But for shoot now and tranfer later, just use a card reader. Quicker, easier, simpler, and no risk of wearing out the USB cable.

I was afraid the answer would be something like that.
My card readers are USB 1.0 / PCMCIA. Both are MUCH slower than using the camera

Does your PC support USB2? If so, a suitable card reader should't cost more than about PP25 or so. And even a USB 1 card reader should be faster than through the camera. Although not by a whole lot.

If the computer doesn't support USB2, is that an upgrade option?

It sounds like you are using the Camera and Scanner Wizard and I am not to sure if NEF is a supported format. It might just be seeing the embedded jpeg and transferring the image as a jpeg. I suggest installing Nikon View (pref) or Picture Project. This will install the necessary drivers for your camera to be seen as a drive in My Computer.

Also, even if you do not use NV it is easy to set up Nikon Acquire (the built in donloader) to act seperately to the program. This is a handy tool. Have a look in the options to find out more.
Just create a desktop or quicklaunch shortcut to NkvAcqu.exe and add "/D=X:\" (sans quotes) to the end of the "Target" in the shortcut properties. The X is the drive letter. This will point the program to the correct drive. This is something that NkAcqu is not able to do itself - it relies on NV to point it in the right direction.

Mine looks like this: "C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkView6\NkvAcqu.exe" /D=F:\ (quotes are included) BTW, I have autoplay turned off to all drives.

Does your PC support USB2

Yes it does, but only five of them, so I need a couple of expanders as well
The PC will handle almost everything native EXCEPT CF cards
As well as the USB, it has 1xFirewire800 & a multi type Card reader as well as a dedicated port for some type of HDD I have never seen. For some reason, they left CF off the list of supported cards, and only supplied 1 PCMCIA slot grrr!

And even a USB 1 card reader should be faster than through the camera. Although not by a whole lot.

To read CF, I need either to unplug the 1GB Microdrive that lives in there as a permanent backup of my most essential stuff, or use my ancient USB1 reader.
Either option runs noticeably slower than plugging the camera in. (nMinutes difference for a 2Gb card)

No I'm not. I detest wizards almost as much as the paperclip, and disable them at every opportunity. It is Windows Explorer doing this. Using ^c^P to move (Thank god I didn't use ^x!) It may be using Wizard code though. Bloody M$ is altogether too fond of patronising "We know better than you" actions for my taste at times. Especially since they get it wrong so often.

Nikon View??? Is that on the disc that came with the camera. Will have to track it down. I tend to avoid freebie software that comes with some piece of kit. I have been burnt too many times with having to re-install

You will find NV here

NV is fairly reasonable software. I use it (if that is any kind of endorsement ) and like you, I avoid junk software that comes bundled with a lot of gear.

There's your answer then: grab a firewire CF reader.

Go to Nikon Asia and download it. You'll probably need serial number from an Oz camera.
