Good News?

Postby Pehpsi on Thu Feb 15, 2007 5:18 pm

hey,

Well i posted my racing pics:

http://www.dslrusers.net/viewtopic.php?t=24227

to a racing site, and had a good response. One guy want's me to take pics of his team to use on their website, and another want's one of my pics to print in 'Dragster Australia', which is the big drag mag in oz :)

What do i do?

I've never given a shot to someone before, only taken them for myself.

The first guy said in return he will give me exposure on his site EG: my name and site etc...

The second guy want's to print one in the mag. Not sure if i get paid for it or not! Should i be getting paid? If so how much?

Should i let him have it for free, as i'm really stocked about my pic making the mag?

Lastly, what colour mode do mags use? RGB? SRGB?

Thanks...:)

This is just my opinion, I don't sell photo's professionally although I do design websites and have some dealings with hard copy printing of publications

The first guy said in return he will give me exposure on his site EG: my name and site etc...

The second guy want's to print one in the mag. Not sure if i get paid for it or not! Should i be getting paid? If so how much?

For the first guy, check out his website. If it's just a small blog with not many users, a basic layout, and really just small fry for a local event he probably doesnt have money to give you. If on the other hand it's a professionally designed site, with lots of traffic and is a central hub for this area, then the answer is a maybe. If the print will be sold on the website then most definately yes you should be getting paid for it.

Even I've heard of that Mag, if your print is appearing in it, in an article that someone has been paid to write (and isn't a free user submitted pic's sections) then yes you should be getting paid for it.

Remember, my opinions only!

thanks guys for the advice.

i've decided to give it to them. it's a good starting point for me and i should be grateful they want to use it, which i am :)

they want me to send them a high-res version of the pic, but didn't say much else. would they want an un-cropped version so they can fit it how they want?

Just send them the high res version as is and in Adobe RGB - do not send sRGB and don’t convert to CYMK - let them do that

Give it to them, it's a big start to get your name in the magazine.

You're one step of my travels, i had 'must obtain accred for one group 1 event this year' at the top of my must do list for this year :)

Grats mate!!

maybe consider drawing up a contract to state they can use the shot for what has been discussed and you retain ownership, hate for you to have an awesome shot be ripped from under you and used for other purposes and they make money off of it and you get none. I agree dont charge but make sure you still have complete control of it, just my opinion
