Vietnam...some photos
Some photos taken in Vietnam in June 2004. I stopped over in HK for 2 nights, so did not do much sight seeing instead went shopping, bought a 1 gig sandisk, 24-120 VR and SB-800.
1. Ha Long Bay, We spent 2 nights on Handspan's new Junk. My sister Mai with her Coolpix 3100. 
2. Danang. We drove pass Danang on our way to Hoi An. 
3. Mui Me. We woke up early to see the sunrise. There were already locals at work, towing in the days catch. 
4. Mui Ne. Testing out the SB-800 
some nice photos there, shame the last one is a little blown with exp, what type of setting did you use for the sb800 manual or ttl?.
I have to admit i wouldn't really want to take anything fancy to Vietnam. kinda reminds me of the scene in full metal jacket. Life's pretty straight without drifting

which scene is that?? because the war is over..... most local wouldn't know the difference, only other foreigners would care. tsanglabs it was handheld. i never carry a tripod, especially for the stuff i like to do.
gengi - I particularly like the sunrise shot at the beach - nice composition and the colouring is evocative of a tropical morning.
But, I also like the pic of the father and family on the bike - very nicely captured and they all look so happy which is really the nice part of this pic. Chris Chris

thanks chris story to that photo, we were passing through Danang in a mini-van. I saw this family next to us, scooting pass, i open the window and asked our driver to drive at the same speed as the scooter. I quickly took a shot, before the family dorve off. I also tried to take photos of other ppl passing by, and i almost caused an accident when a scooter got frighten when i tried taking a photo of him, he panicked and almost collided with an oncoming scooter. i respect that not everybody wants there photo taken, even if I found it to be a photo opportunity. genji

1/ Ha Long Bay, never been there before and after the war, but knowing it's beautiful places of our country. 2/Danang was the Air base of our 1st Air Division (VNAF) of the SVN before 1975, yeah! I can see Hoi An under my wing on South approaching after missions, these pics brought me back to many memoirs of 30 years ago and Hoi An was a very nice place to have seafoods as fresh prawn and its old culture. 3. Should call Mui Ne (Phan Thiet), again was usualy on our flight path and POL for Huey (UH-1B/C/D) on routine liasion mission from Tan Son Nhut to Nhatrang (2nd Air Div.). We landed for refueling and have lunch with fresh seafoods of the day most of my trips. You should overnight NhaTrang or visit Nhatrang, with beautiful and peaceful beach and it was my birth place same as my hometown, finished high school, and earned my wing at the Nhatrang Air Traing Center, (Nhatrang Airforce Base) in 1968. Haven't been back there since I fled in 1978, but never ever forget those lovely images and ton of memories once I were young. Birddog114

I really like the shot of what seems to be a happy family on the bike... Nothing pretentious and gives the photo a genuine happy feeling... The sunrise shot on the water's edge is very moody with great colors and a great subject/topic... Cheers, Mudder Aka Andrew
Does it temp u to go back? ppl who lived through the vietnam war have a certain resentment with the government. I've been back twice in 3 years, I dont feel any affinity for the ppl, but its a country i feel safe in. Vietnam is turning into Thailand, not there yet but thats where its heading. beej, keep an eye on the tips and link forum, I'll post the link for everyone. mudder, believe me when i tell you it was surreal at that particular time and place. and the photo captured the moment exactly the way i felt. genji
genji, Not for now but maybe in the future! I didn't like and never ever like the Red and yellow star, I fled my beloved country cos them and I won't be back until I see the difference color. You're the young generation and of course you may not had or lived thru with the Red so your feelings and understanding are difference. I still fight with them in my heart and they're still my other side. I tried to forget all in the past years but I really can't, my loyalty is only for one color! and that color now is no longer overthere but it is still remaining in my life. Both of our families (my wife and mine) were deep suffered under their regime and lost everything after the war. Myself, personnaly experienced the suffering during the 4 years in the labour and re-education camp, my left ear is now totally deaf cos their totures once I was shotdown and captured. Those are my personnaly thoughts! Birddog114

I was born there in 1978 and fled in 1979. I totally where agree with Bird and understand his resentment towards the communist government. I have plan to visit my birth place hopefully sometime this year or the next. I really want to see where I came from.
I once wrote a poem in high school about Vietnam. I can not remember it clearly since it's been 12 years since grade 10 . It went something like this: Homeland When the rice fields lie fallow I play the flute on the back of my buffalo Happy were the people with the King Over the land the intelligents minds, spread like the wind. The giant green hills of Hue Stand high, brightly and brave To the east, lies clear blue water and the south had tremendous heat In the big city of Saigon Communist rule is yet not gone Where the government had no pity when their people lived in the trenches, of a war city Our flag striped yellow with red with much pride Changed to a yellow star inside ....and then I can't rememeber the rest. It went something like that.

Great pics. That's one crowded scooter. Love the kid in the back with his hair flapping and he's waving. Love it. I love the first shot too, too bad the scene in the back isn't a little sharper. Of course the fishnets are spectacular.
There's even something I like about the jumping shot. There is this surreal burst of light coming from her center, and her limbs are sort of hanging out of it. Weird, but I do kind of like it. Birdie, I'm always humbled when hearing of your history in VietNam. I think that this is a fascinating place, and maybe I'll work on going over there sometime soon. Thanks for sharing.
