D70 Won't Turn Off...

hey there, just had a big day racing, and at the end of it, my D70 refuses to turn off. I have to take the battery out!

Need my cam tomorrow like i've never needed it before! Heaps of people want pics.

Is it safe to keep taking the battery out with a lens attached?

Probably the best thing to do for the days shooting is not to turn the camera off at all. All of the modern Nikon DSLRs from the D100 onward use very little power when they're in power-on standby - in fact, it's only very slightly more than being powered off from everything I've read. I know I've accidently left my D70 in a bag for 2 weeks turned on, picked it up, and it still had enough charge to take the shots I wanted.

There's been posts on changing lenses with the power on before, so you can probably search it out, but the general consensus was you can change lenses with the power on, but it's probably better to do it with the power off if you can.

The most important thing is if you're taking the battery out to power off the camera, make sure the green CF memory activity light has gone out - you could end up with data corruption otherwise.


You may want to try using the recessed reset button in the bottom of the camera - this will most likely fix the problem - I think this happened to my D70 once and it fixed it. But... if its working well enough, do what you have to, then fiddle with resets and whatever later

i did turn it on and off quite a bit today but this is the first problem in 10 months since i've had it.

tried both reset modes with no luck. i think it's a physical problem with the switch, loose connection or something...

guess i have to just leave it on for the day. not sure how long the battery will last with the 70-200. won't be using VR i think.

mmm, as the reset didn't fix the problem, it sounds like it might need to go to the Nikon doctor for a checkup

Once the D70 goes into standby mode, the 70-200 won't draw any more power than say the kit lens In standby mode, it's really only powering the top display on the body (and some other stuff, but nothing consuming huge amounts of power).

i know someone else who cant get his d70 to turn off, its been like that for a few weeks that i know of maybe longer, he just takes the battery out.

Pehpsi - mine did this last year, and there was a definite problem .... it went off to Anderson's (in Brisbane) and was fixed in 2 days ....
but it definitely has to be fixed - this is not a good problem to have

It's still under waranty????

still won't turn off, but i just left it on all day (9hrs), took heaps of shots with my 70-200 (VR off), and the battery still reads full bars. gota love that nikon battery

got the 3yr warranty for $100 extra. glad i did...

No problem with changing lenses with the power on. I do it all the time. As previous posters stated. Just leave it on. It'll last for months because the camera uses very little power when in idle mode. Of course, you have a second battery anyway?

i have my original battery (the best), a second nikon (not bad at all), and a cheapo, which drains then reloads after every shot.

where does one start this process? i bought it from harvey norman, do they have anything to do with it? or does it go straight to nikon? if so, i'm in sydney not far from town, anyone know my closest dikon doc?

Take it straight to nikon would be the go, avoid the retailers

Depends on your extended warranty and who it is with. Check with the insurer as to what you should do - back to HN or direct to Nikon.

on the HN receipt it just says:

"extended warranty sold, 24months, see manufactures documentation for warranty details"

to me that says, go to nikon.

just spoke to nikon at bondi, they just said to drop it off with receipt and warranty card and that's it sounds simple enough...
