Interesting read Alex, as someone that jumped in at digital and skipped for the most part film, its interesting to learn more about and how it compares to todays digital.
Mmm... I had always thought that slide film had a higher dynamic range than colour negative film. This was basically because colour negatives basically "compress" the data by half. When you look at a colour negative the difference between dark and light is very small and this is doubled when you make a print.
Maybe it was just that a projected slide had a greater dynamic range than a print from a colour negative.
