[LOST] Noise at ISO 1600

Just received the 5D today and boy am I going to love this beast

It's not as different to the Nikon system as I expected - already getting the hang of it But shame on you Canon for not providing LCD protectors

So where's the noise at ISO 1600 I ask? Wayyyy off in the distant history now

It's down around the boots in that shot. Can't you see all that horrible colour noise?

Oh yeah, maybe my standards are different as I've been with Canon for a while.

I don't get it, is this a Nikon or a Canon shot? There's plenty of noise visible in the 100% image.

D2H, ISO 1600, the only PP was WB adjust and a bit of sharpening. No Noise Ninja (in fact, this was "developed" in Aperture).

There is HEAP of noise in that? My understanding is that Nikon have alot of Luma noise/canon colour noise. That looks really bad

I'll be doing a comparison this weekend b/ween the D2Xs and the 5D - will be interesting to see what happens at the high ISO settings

One thing I've noticed about the 5D, there's less twiddling around with the options before you start shooting. Pretty much had the camera ready for me to use within half an hour. I kind of miss having heaps of options

Here's the 100% crop of same settings for the D2Xs

No I didn't manipulate the curves to bring out more noise. I did do curve manipulation on both shots to get a decent exposure and the 5D still came out with a lot less noise.

I'll take a few shots under more favourable conditions at high ISO over the weekend and see how the shots go.

now you have the best from both worlds
the canon though does handle noise better this is realtive to exposure though but in direct comparisson to the d2x 5d is much better at noise handling

The noise in the d2x shot is terrible Wayne. I'd better stick with my d200.

Wow, that D2x must be defective (you should have waited with this picture until the camera was sold ). I get better results from my webcam at dim lighting...

Or was the shot underexposed by two stops and then pulled back up?

Mic - I wish I had won the lottery. Alas I'm giving up the Nikon gear to fund the switch over to Canon

Just to clarify and prevent any misintepretations, this post and pic comparisons are not there to bash Nikon. Nikon are a bloody awesome system but it does not meet my requirements anymore hence my move.

It was a painful decision for me to make the switch especially after having worked so hard to get to the D2Xs, I likened it as to having to end a relationship. But it had to be done as I really felt I was being limited by the abilities of the Nikon cameras. I was already there with their top model and I still had the issue with high ISO noise and I couldn't go anywhere else. Indeed I could persevere and wait it out until they get it right, but in the process potentially missing out on a number of opportunities due to a technical limitation. There are many valid points to debate this point, however the choice has been made

I really do appreciate Nikons and always will as it has led me to where I am today. I am not switching to Canon in bitterness but the experience has really shown me that there's a lot more to photography equipment than when I was solely concentrating on Nikon. I may pickup Nikon again in the future, who knows. There's no reason why someone can't have both Nikon and Canon gear to be able to use one or the other to suit different situations.

Have fun shooting all and I look forward to posting more photos in the future. Will put some up from my Japan and Vanuatu trip soon.
