Batteries...Anyone have any comments on using non standard Canon battieres?
I saw this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-X-Battery-for- ... dZViewItem 2 x BP-511 replacements which are 1800mha vs the standard 1100. Should I be worried about using these?? Its a spare set to my genuine bp-511 Cheers Kris 5D | 16-35L | 35L | 85L | 135L | 70-200F2.8IS | 580EX

I have lots of Canon and non-Canon batteries.
The only problem comes when the batteries start failing to hold a charge (which will probably happen sooner than with the Canon cells). The camera should be unaffected. I wouldn't get too hung up on the claimed rating of 1800 mAh (vs. the standard Canon BP-511A which is 1390 mAh). After a year or so most generic batteries perform worse than the Canon ones. Just think of them as cheap batteries that won't last as long (in terms of years) as the originals. They're much better than running out of battery power! Some NB-2L clones (for 350D/etc) that I have show up with a low battery warning on the camera after a few hours, but continue to work for days and days. They're still useful to have.
Thanks Dave, i think 2 batteries for $25 is pretty good - certainly cheaper than the originals that Canon charge an arm and a leg for!

I buy all of my spare batteries from Global Batteries. They aren't genuine and I have never had a problem with them.
Standard disclaimer: no affiliation - just a satisfied customer.
I bought a non-standard battery... and it wouldnt eject from the camera without more persuasion than I would admit.
Ill personally stick to my canon batteries. If sony make laptop batteries that explode... what do non-standard manufacturers do with theirs?? Jonathan
I bought 2 generic batteries for about that same price. However when I'm shooting I still use the genuine canon battery and only pop in the generic as backup. Hasn't affected my camera performance
I bought $35 Hähnel lithium ion batteries for my 30D - "HL-511 Canon Type" 7.4V 1500mAh and haven't had a problem with them - lasts just as long as the Canon original battery that came with the 30D.
Twin City stock them in Adelaide.
Thanks guys, ill grab some no name batteries from ebay as backups to the two genuine canon ones I have!
Not taking my grip overseas so Ill pack a few more batteries.. 5D | 16-35L | 35L | 85L | 135L | 70-200F2.8IS | 580EX
