Canon Powershot A620 - Memory Card Issues

Postby Laurie on Wed Feb 28, 2007 10:04 am

Hi All,

We bought my mum a canon Powershot for xmas year of 2005.
She took it to Canberra where she dropped it.

I bought with the Camera an Ultra II SanDISK 2GB SD Card.
it started to become corrupt when my parents were in New Zealand and it was cutting the photos in half and half the library stopped working!
My dad took it to Canon and they said it was fine, just the housing was a little stuffed.

I returned the SD Card to where i got it (very easy and compliments to where I bought it from ;))

The replacement has just decided to stop working ALL TOGETHER.
I cant get it working in a card reader and i can't even after formatting get it working on the camera.
I have this feeling that when ever something is dropped, it just stops working correctly, or if it stops working correctly it is because it was dropped!
My dad said Canon checked the camera and said it was fine.
Is it possible ive received 2 dud SD Cards? or is it the camera that is screwed.
Are there any tests that I can run to check to see if the camera is stuffed?

any help, my mum would appreciate, i wanna get this fixed before going to NY!!!
Thanks Guys

Are you formatting the card in the camera itself?

The only thing I can suggest is to borrow another SD card and see whether you have the same issues. They can fail, I've had one replaced by the manufacturer.

Laurie,

Can you try the card in your D70? Try formatting it and see if it works. That might help to determine if it is the camera or the card.

Do you have any old smaller cards left that you could also try in your parent's camera? For example, I have a bunch of 8MB and 16MB cards from when I first started in digital.

thanks for the quick replies.

the card is an SD card
my Nikon D70s is CF
i did try the SD card from my phone and took a couple of photos and it worked fine.
I am just a little concerned that the camera might be stuffed as i have sent a card from this camera back before (with no hassles).

If you can format it then it's working on at least some level.
You've said it doesn't work on the camera and doesn't work in a card reader and yet you say you can format it. Huh?

If you can accurately describe the symptoms that might help.

I formatted it in Camera,
but plugged into the card reader it doesn't respond.
i have tried the 2gb in my phone, i dont remember if it worked or not i will try when i get home.

the 1gb worked, but it may just become corrupt over time :/
I am unable to reformat the card.

Also after just turning it on, i can sometimes take 1 photo before it says there is a memory card error, with/without the LCD on.

I had some trouble with a couple of SD cards in an A620. For memory, one of them turned bad and the other was bad from the get go. I just got new cards and that fixed the problem. I think it's very possible that you have had a couple of bad cards.
