How to Submit to News/Press?

Postby Yi-P on Sun Mar 18, 2007 1:14 am

I'm just wondering, if I have a few photos that I want to submit to the news or press, which way should I go?

Do you actually need to be an accredited media photographer to get your photos to the press?

Just out of curiosity :)

The simplest way is to contact the news desk (most newspapers will have this listed in their directory listing) and tell them about the image that you have. If they think it is newsworthy or something that they might use then they will ask you to send in through. If published you will revieve payment at a standard rate.

Most newspapers have a standard rate for standard photographs... often it is as low as $40-$75 for an image used. Newspapers are not big spenders when it comes to aquiring photographs and if possible they will use an image for free.

It also depends a lot on the news value of your image. Simplest way to measure this is to determine how valuable the same image will be in one years time. The more significant the image the more it is likely to be remembered and reused over time and therefore the more valuable it is. A photograph of an ordinary accident might have low value, even if you were the only one on the scene. If the image is of a celeb or politician getting busted or an aircraft flying into a building then you are in a far better position to negotiate.... just don' take all day to do it!

On the odd occasion I have supplied spec news to newspapers ( ones that I was not working for at the time) and one of the main secrects is to let them know you have the image and get it to them within an hour or two so they have time to get it into production.
