This picture of the week is from the man with the half ape, half man avatar, Stubbsy. A great and simple shot from his recent photographic journey to NZ with Sheepie, it shows the great observation skills Peter has for details. Here is an image one could quite easily overlook or miss, which would be a pity as this is a great simple image.

Very good choice Glen,

I kept wanting to go back to this image of Peter's. As you say, simple but very effective. The geometry in it is very appealing and the rocky background really enhances the photo as well.

Well taken Peter, that geometry certainly attracted the mathematician in you

Cheers,

Rats! - I have an image almost the same as this (there's a surprise!).

Fair enough though, I probably wouldn't have taken mine if Peter hadn't pointed out the potential of it :)

Well done Peter, and yes - it is a great example of your eye for details.

Congrats Peter... I'm sure you'd find some intereting mathematics behind that shot, fibonaci numbers or some form of geometric progression.

i very rarely post in the POTW threads
but this shot is so simple and so interesting
very well spotted.

did you just stand above the plant when you took the shot or did you use a ladder or just a tripod?

Thanks for choosing my image Glen. Given Laurie's question I thought I'd explain how I took the shot. The cactus is in a garden in Rotorua that is adjacent to a wall that was the edge of a building entrance landing a metre or so above ground level. I lay on the walkway and leant across the the wall so it supported my weight so I could bend down and get the shot. The cactus was close to a half a metre wide and this let me get above it much better than straddling it would have. Not a pretty look though.

Good story on how it was taken Stubbsy, I didn't realise the scale of it from the image.

This is a great image - simple & beautiful.
I loved it as soon as I saw it, and because of some computer troubles I have just looked at it through a brand new monitor & it really sings.

The sharpness, colour and contrast added to the symmetry of the image make it an absolute cracker.

Congrats on PotW Peter. :)

Great photo and congratulations, Peter. Have you worked out if the cactus represents a golden spiral? :D

Congrats Stubbsy, it is quite a remarkable image. After staring at it for a long while, I could fell a headache coming on... :) The spiral effect and the contrast with the pebbles is excellent and unusual.

Damn you Patrick  NO!

Thanks you to all who've commented. There is some irony in the fact that of all my NZ pics so far this one get POTW and could have been taken anywhere

What a waste of money, Peter, next time take a few lenses down to the local nursery, you might even make a few dollars do some promotional shots with them.. saves all that traveling and stuff :P

It should be Fibonacci rather than a golden spiral, as Fibonacci is normally represented in plant life (no great knowledge of Fibonacci, but a listener to gardening programs)!
