canon 30D shutter

i have a quick question i was looking at the 30d specs and seen this
New and improved shutter will last for 100,000 cycles is this normal for all Dslr's and what happens after the 100,000 cycles?

Because DSLR's have a mechanical shutter, it is subject to wear and tear (like all things mechanical). On the 30D, Canon say it is rated to 100,000 actuations, which would be probably a mean value. When the shutter is worn out, it will either become stuck, or just very slow (might stick in a certain point). When this happens, the camera either goes to the happy place in the sky for cameras, or to the camera doctors for a new shutter.

Its because it has never really been tested fully before. I know of 20D's with in excess of 100,000 shutter actuations and some that failed early. Just like the D70, some failed at around 15,000 some 20,000, others have been going fine for 50,000+ ...

Canon just seemed to put a number on it this time. 100,000 actuations is some fairly serious photo taking and for an average person this would be 5 - 10 years worth. I know that I can take 4000 - 5000 photos per full 4 day motorsport event, but that is not the norm, usually I take around 500 - 1000 a month at most (normally on the lower side of that range).

Head from a friend that some 1DXXX do hit 100'000 during its professional life, good think is that Canon can change the "shutter + housing" not sure what its call actually, anyway herd its not too costly too.

$450 bucks for Canon (Ryde factory in Sydney) to replace the shutter on my 20D last month.

I've had my 1Dmark11n for less than 6 months and it's already over 20k, that's 10% of it's life gone. My guess is that if it goes to the full 200k it will need replacing within 2 years.

At my current rate of shooting (about 1k/week) I'll be due for a new shutter in < 2 years from DOP. That said, I'll be in Europe for circa 6 months later this year, so that figure may drop to < 18 months. O.O

I heard a figure from L&P photographics for $850 shutter replacement in a IDS Mark II (16.7mp FF body)

new ID mark III has a rating at 300,000 actuations!

$850 is not bad to have the shutter replaced on a $10k camera, I'd be happy to pay that...
