85mm f1.4 lens falls apart at a wedding

Don't you hate it when your working a wedding, the bride is about to walk in, and you screw off your lens hood and the front end of the lens (85mm f1.4) comes off with it. Then the front element comes out with the remaining internals about to follow.

Anyway, i put the whole lot back together and it turned out ok. The only problem is, i have one spring left over. lol. Guess i'll be taking a trip back to Nikon during the week.

Shit... for a tank like lens.. I'm very surprised, especially since this is such a highly regarded lens and very much at the top of the Nikon collection.. to just fall apart... yikes..

Glad to hear it will probably be okay though Great lens, surprised to hear of one falling apart though, I used a couple of them on the weekend and they felt pretty damn solid to me

I was just thinking while using mine the other day, I love this lens.

Question: Would it be better to mount the hood direct to the lens, and then the filter, or filter then hood? Initially I put the filter, then the hood, but I'm thinking the hood is now effectively 6mm longer over the front element. If the length is insignificant, what would be best from a protection point of view? (I hate the day I drop this lens)

I was of the same mind with you guys, this lens is a huge chunk of glass built like a tank. But the spring washer that i'm holding in my hand has changed my mind.

The day did turn out fine.

Not that we know of, but we have had about 4 independent people tell us the same thing.

my posted question seems to have not made it through earlier today (update errors I guess).

Wondering, if on a lens like the 85/1.4 where the hood is a screw on type, should the filter be behind, or infront (inside) of the hood?

Currently I have my filter directly on the lens, but I'm thinking the hood would be deisgned to go directly on the lens, and add a filter on after.

Any thoughts on this logic?

Sorry, I don't use any filters on that lens.

Six of one...

The hood is way too short to cause vignetting on DX sensors. I use CPLs a fair bit, so it is easy to guess where I put the filter.
