50 1.4 comparisons

Hi Everyone. I've been getting some really odd effects with my 1.4 often photos come out looking like they've had a blur filter put through on a seperate layer. So I got my bro's 50mm lens and compared it to mine. The shot on the left is from my lens.



So there seems to be a problem here. How much does lens reconditioning cost? I can see a bit of dust in the lens floating deep inside.

Were the shots taken with a tripod and focused/exposed manually?

The dust would rarely be an issue.

I presume that tehse were each taken using the same body?

Did you try comparing what happens if you use manual focus with each of the lenses?

Yes they were both taken on the D00. I'll do some more testing and get back to you.

the weird thing is that when my lens is stopped down to f4.5 it looks just as good as my bro's :

(also, these were on timer, so there was no chance of camera shake when pushing the button)

Oh just to make it clearer the first image i posted was both lenses set to 1.4

Has your lens recieved any hard knocks or any mistreatment ? Do you have filters on either lens ?

Try focusing manually on both lenses, and mount the lens on same body without moving the tripod?

At f4.5 the depth of field may be sufficient to overcome focus issues. I would have a look at that. I would also print out one of those often maligned focus test sheets and see if it front or back focuses. I am a bit of a nerd and test all my lenses that way but they are all fine (more or less) including my 50mm 1.4.
