Nikon to announce new system?Friend overseas sent me this page:
http://www.dslrmagazine.com/digital/obj ... kor-2.html Written on 3rd April, I hope its not a joke for april fool. It is in Spanish, but I'll translate the pieces here. My translated version: [Translator hat ON] From very reliable sources, we got to know that Nikon is about to announce, during mid-year, a series of new lenses. Presenting in a blow, 15 new lenses of a new system, consisting of extreme wide angles to super telephotos, going from "standard zoom", macro and maybe other special lenses, like a fisheye, and tilt & shift... Introducing a whole new system can mean many things or many things at the same time. Above all, if we observe closely into the latest DSLR, we notice that it emphasises on a body without focusing motor. From there we can expect new lenses to have a supersonic motor with improved focusing and image stabilisation. The thing is that they will implement a new mount, of larger diameter. That can (probably) mount older F Mount lenses via an adaptor. Everyone must be thinking at this time, "will it be Full Frame, or APS-C sized format?". If it was FF, the lenses will be in a much larger size. Will it be a new Nikon camera system for all these 15 new lenses? According to rumours, "that" mysterious camera will have an extraordinary image capture sensor, perhaps with the new Foveon technology or similar. That is beyond our speculation, but the 15 new Nikkor lenses, they seem to be serious about it. [Translator hat OFF]
Nice find Yip.
Let's just watch and wait! Geoff

One story I've heard is that Sony are producing a FF sensor.
if that's the case ... g.

I'm just hoping they can retain the AF motor and F-Mount heritage (adaptor is fine). It is not very feasible to jump again from having so many AF screwdriven lenses.
Fingers crossed...
I doubt it.
This year possibly a FF CCD. Not likely to introduce a heap of new lenses of that quantity, Nikon just doesn't do that. Most of Nikon's top of the line lenses work on FF now anyway. As usual, we will have to wait and see what they leak out in the week prior to full announcement. I'll believe it when i see it. Steve.

and scrap lenses like the 70-200VR, 85/1.4... all to risk a new system, dont think so. Makes NO sense from a product lifecycle / brand continuity perspective.
If it was, they would simply lose all of the new generation customers to another brand, cant remember its name, "Combo", or somehting like that... I could believe a new sensor, but not an entire system, non backwards compatible, that would be suicidal (for Nikon that is, not me).
Speculation is very much like having a crap - you think about it, you sit on it and when it finally happens - relief. But in the mean time all it does is tie up your guts

Maybe they are releasing a dedicated underwater DSLR Could be useful to some.
Maybe a dedicated panorama DSLR with three FUJI CCDs, side by side That would be nice. How about a 4/3rds format DSLR for those people who only use one eye. Steve.

Canon has made a FF sensor and Sony hasn’t. Sony did not need to. Sony entered DSLR market only a year ago. I think the reason why Nikon is not releasing FF DSLR is because Nikon and Sony could not negotiate a contract. We know Sony charges high prices for their products and services. Anyway, I think, soon, we will have many FF DSLRs. Not from not Nikon or Canon, but from Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Pentax. FF on a digital cameras will be affordable and it won’t be a big deal. Nikons: D200, N80. Nikkors: 20-35 f/2.8 AFD, 50mm f/1.4 AFD. Speedlights: SB800.
In 50 years time we can buy FF DSLR like once again prices of film point and shoots...
Yet they are smart enough to know anything and take the shot for you, and all photographers will be retired by that age...
Even Kodak make a 35mm size sensor:

I bet you $2 Nikon's D300 or a newly designed system will come with the FF. Sony will have it too. By November this year or February next year. PS: Don't know what cameras we will have in 50 years from now. In less than 10 years time the companies will be competing against each other offering bigger sensors in smaller cameras. Just like with MPs. Nikons: D200, N80. Nikkors: 20-35 f/2.8 AFD, 50mm f/1.4 AFD. Speedlights: SB800.
Re: Nikon to announce new system?
I love an automated translation - Babelfish perhaps? As for new systems, I have reached critical mass with my DSLR and related purchasing. Greg - - - - D200 etc

Re: Nikon to announce new system?
Does that mean your purchasing has a life and momentum of its own?
Re: Nikon to announce new system?
It seems that way Glen. There was an interesting moment the other day when I told Rosanne I was going to buy another camera for our forthcoming trip. Surprised would not entirely cover it. Greg - - - - D200 etc

Re: Nikon to announce new system?
I for one welcome our new nikon system overlords... a new lense system and full frame camera is exactly what nikon needs. They are lagging behind Canon in noise performance, FF, lense's and product range.
An entirely new system (which is a first move away from the F mount in what 60 years?) will be great for Nikon. It will either sink them or breath new life into them in my opinion. Nikon has to do something their current offering's have all seemed very much the same for several years now. Bring on the new system, new lenses, new camera's etc etc I for one cannot wait for the flood of cheaper second hand F mount quality glass that wil hit the market. It's called Canon, it's already seen many people dump their nikon gear on ebay and on the forum
Yep, it'd good to a lot people. Nikons: D200, N80. Nikkors: 20-35 f/2.8 AFD, 50mm f/1.4 AFD. Speedlights: SB800.
True, but there is still a fair portion of pro nikon users around that haven't... far more than "have". This will either see Pro's dump there current Nikon gear for the new stuff (if it's good) or finally take the plunge and go over to the Dark Side of the Force. Lots of speculation! Quite frankly, it doesn't bother me what happens - I know it certainly won't make me take better pictures... Don't get me wrong, new technology is exciting but don't lose sight of the forest for all the trees
Here's an interesting read: http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/full-frame/review.html Cheers, Stephen
Re: Nikon to announce new system?
No, I did translate the whole article myself. I do know fluent Spanish and tho for that very particular phrase, I'm not sure how to get it over to an English version, so I just did a straight translation without too much effort thinking...
I find that article over at nikonians to be sadly a load of tripe in my opinion. He talks about nikon making world class camera's, with smaller sensor sizes so the noise is lower. Fair enough, but he goes and does himself a dis-service by saying less caring camera companies are giving consumers full frame sensors which is not what they really need.
It's sad by true by a large margin Canon noise is allot lower even with their full frame sensor's. Hurry up Nikon! D70, Sigma 10-20mm, 28-70 F2.8 EX, 70-200mm F2.8 EX, Nikon 50mm AFD, http://lukeo.fotopic.net/
I usually try to avoid all these full frame debates so I can't say I have read every argument on the topic but I thought the Nikon article made some good points about the technical limitations with light fall-off at the edges and overall lens quality.
I don't disagree that Canons can produce some really nice clean images but sometimes I think they're a little too clean and I just don't like that slightly plastic look. There's definitely some neat image processing going on but I actually prefer the Nikon results. It's personal preference I guess. What's your main reason for wanting full frame so much, Lukeo?
Hmm perhaps my train of thought did not entirely come across. I am not against a full frame nikon camera, and may just be that as the article says on nikonians it's just "giving the consumer what they think they want".
My thoughts at the time were something along the lines of if nikon has gone to all the trouble of redesigning a new system, they've probably gone to the effort of altering the image circle of the lense's to allow for full frame usage. It would make sense from a marketing point of view at the very least. When/If this new system comes to life, it will breath some fresh life into Nikon. It should also be just what a good portion of pro's have been waiting for, and will either create a rush to the new system or a rush to the dark side . Either way, cheaper quality glass will filter down to likes of me, and this can only be a good thing. D70, Sigma 10-20mm, 28-70 F2.8 EX, 70-200mm F2.8 EX, Nikon 50mm AFD, http://lukeo.fotopic.net/
There's been talk of a 1.1 crop factor in the past; perhaps this is that?
Mind you, there's no real need for any new lens format, per se. Just some long overdue upgrading of the existing range. g.

I read another translation of the article - and they mention that the rumour is 15 new lenses. They then say that this number is enough for a whole new lens system, and so they speculate that it might be a new system (speculation on top of speculation). If it really is 15 news lenses, I'd say it's more likely updates of the existing range of lenses to include AF-S, perhaps some optical updates to the older wide angle primes to be more towards telecentric like the 17-35mm (which works great on 35FF).
But I'm not sure of the number of lenses - heard another rumour from Thom Hogan who mentions that Nikon will soon (by northern summer) announce 5 new lenses (only one of which will be DX). BTW Chris - that speculation/crap joke really cracked me up... hehhe
