Photo Course

Postby Jeff on Wed Apr 11, 2007 7:17 am

Hi
Matt.K has generously offered his time to run a short course on Photography for interesred parties. The course would cover the basics and some advanced stuff and run for about 4hrs.
We would about 6-8 people and a venue.
First thing first, is there any interest ? Could you PM me if you are and I will try to put it together.

There may be a cost for any venue that we use, and that would be shared amongst the participants.

I think I would definately need a course like this, however, with only about 9 weeks to go before the expected birth of Reschsmooth Jr, I don't want to commit to something I may not be able to make, thereby robbing someone else of the opportunity.

Sounds good though.

Cheers

Gary, in case my ambiguous ramblings weren't clear, if numbers become an issue, and I am taking someone's spot, you can exclude me as the next 9 weeks will be very uncertain for me - ie. I don't want to say yes, and then, on very short notice, have to pull out, thereby depriving someone else of the opportunity. However, if notice is not required, I will put my hand up as a potential contender.

I'm a bit confused at just who the short course is aimed at. My initial understanding was that it was basic photography aimed at a beginners level.....stuff like the basics, camera tips, simple lighting tips, tips on getting better images and maybe a very simple workflow. I see the attendee list contains names of folk who could be said to have fairly advanced skills and so I am now not sure what is expected. I can't cover basic and advanced in 4 hours and I don't want to disappoint anyone. Perhaps those who have listed their names should put forward a wish list of what it is they want to cover? Then I could get an idea of what to prepare.

A course that can make my camera take better photos would be ideal.

Seriously, a portraiture/lighting/workflow/retouching course would be great, and, given time constraints, a course focusing on the first two would be enough for me (especially if the course was based around use of a D200, Metz CL4 & SB800 (plus two monoblocks and brollies).

Patrick,

Some of what you're suggesting is pretty much a redo of last year's portraiture workshop, and I do want to have another one (or two) of those in the not too distant future.

But I see those as being separate from what we're discussing here.

I'm still working on securing a venue, btw.

Slightly OT, but does anyone know of Sports Photog courses in Sydney?

I saw one once run by a photog from the SMH (i think), but can't find anything.

Any help appreciated.

Back on topic:

I think a portrait workshop would be nice, lets face it, theres easy money in portraits, and it leads to confidence in other areasof photography.

Very true, however, you are assuming I could get anywhere near the BB! Trust me, it has already been spent, and the word Nikon didn't even get a mention!

But thanks for the good wishes, although I don't want to hijack this thread.

Matt,

I'll put my vote behind lighting workshop as well. For me, it is a bit of a hit and miss on using my SB600. This can be combined with either portrait/still life, etc whatever you want to make it intesting.

Cheers,

OK. I think something along the lines of a very quick overview of the basics and then a look at exploiting natural light for portraits/babies and then refining those portraits with the addition of an SB-800 or 2 and perhaps a bit of bounce with a reflector....we will leave the studio lighting for Gary or others to arrange for another session. Followed by a demonstration of working through the logical steps of controlling our cameras and subjects for maximum image quality and then maybe some simple Photoshop enhancements of our images. Then we will build a spaceship and a nuclear reactor to finish the day off. Can anyone arrange for an attractive model....preferably not professional, to join in for a fun day?
My aim would be to simplify the steps required to produce a good quality image almost down to a formula that could then be modified to suit the individuals requirements. I'm thinking the zen of photography type approach, just for a change. Hopefully we can find a venue with a variety of backgrounds...urbane or garden/park type.
Anybody still coming? :D 8) 8) 8)
