More light with the 35mm or more flexibility and less light with the 16-35? cant decide on buying the prime or the uwa lens

After just coming back from the UK myself, I can suggest you go the UWA. I was walking around with my 30mm on and wanted more. So I ended up switching back to the kit lens ( to get 18mm ).

Some building and landmarks you just can't get back far enough or fit it all in.

35mm on a 5D is pretty wide its like 24mm on a 1.6x crop but yes, wide wide would be handy! Think 35mm is wide enough on FF in a church? the extra 2 stops is handy...

Anyway, f/2.8 is easily fast enough. I can't remember the last time I shot at f/4 under 25mm or so with my 17-40... PS. Why are you selling your 24-70?

Never in a dim church or indoors? I shoot wide open on my 50m alot, and always want lower than f2.8 when its darkish!

If I'm indoors and shooting wide (like under 30mm) I can handhold to quite low shutter speeds - and I'm usually at ISO1600 or so anyway. So I try and stop it down to f/5.6 at least for increased DOF and sharpness.

Fair enough shooting wide open with a 50mm - that is a much longer lens though (in comparison to the short end of a 16-35 or 17-40).

Get a gorillapod too - they look funny enough that you can often get away with using them in "no tripods" areas

If it's not 100% urgent maybe wait a couple of months and get the mkII version of the 16-35 - it's noticably nicer for full frame users.

i dont think its a case of Know it alls Kris, Poon obviously puts it down as a gift to get away with not paying GST, 99/100 times if you were to buy from say B&H or Adorama you will pay GST so if people are basing their replies on BH/Adorama its hardly a case of them being 'konw it alls'

These are HKG sellers, not B&H. B&H users get stung because of the postage method and the fact the invoices are marked with full costs.

I think it's *should* be subject to it, but often you miss out. Even with gst, Poon's prices are usually better than overseas anway,

I would be happy to pay the gst. What would grump me out a bit is the day or two while the PTB faff about trying to decide whether to tell me that my new toy is here and where I have to go to pay the tax and pick it up.

And yes, the authorities are well aware of the prices of things. I think it comes back to a cost/benefit analysis of this: what's the cost of collection, vs the value of what they're going to collect?

What I say is that for any order you place through here, you should factor the GST into your costings, and you should always expect to be hit for that cost. Then, if you get it, it is not a problem for you: you've expected it, and it's in your budget.

And if you don't happen to get hit .... consider it a bonus.

Ozi, more than likely a bit long but on the 5D its great! See the picture ZAAAP under the Images section, 135 F2 with no sharpening.

Whilst the 1.4 is VERY tempting - the flexibility whilst traveling is what you will gain. The 16-35 II looks to be a seriously tempting piece of kit - and I'm thinking I'm going to collect mine very soon.

Just so many new toys out with the 1D III - I'm actually going to pass along my 580EX "I" as well. Anyway - sorry getting OT - the zoom - all the way...

Nothing. Its different on cropped bodies because the 16-35 variants and most other UWA's are soft in the corners by nature. Given you're using a crop you are elimating some of the softer edges. I don't think placing this lens on a 1D3 will be any different to any other camera. Naturally all bodies will work differently, one of the biggest factors is crop size.

Any cropped body will benefit from this, 20D, 30D, 1D MK III. The Full frame bodies will obviously show alot more of the frame and therefore more of the softer edges.
