I had a look at the technical specs page, hoping to find some technical details. Like what it's made of.

Nothing remotely technical on that page ... nor on any of their other pages.

Basically, it's a camera condom with holes.

The material looks like rubber or just silicon based rubber that is used in many iPod and mobile phone condoms. I wonder how high can I drop a D40/50 after equipping it with an armor?

I have one on my D70s.

I do NOT use a camera bag at all when hiking, climbing and mt biking so I got the armour as a little insurance against small bumps. Think of it as a pair of gloves for a motor bike rider, they wont save your life but will prevent minor injuries.

I am VERY happy with the product, does exactly what I ask of it. I feel it would be hopeless for those that carry their camera in a bag 90% of the time but if like me, your SLR is mostly out of its bag then its actually a fairly useful bit of kit...I would purchase it again.

Has anyone seen anything like this for a D2 model? I like to carry both bodies at once, rather than have one tucked away, so I need a fair bit of protection.

Unfortunately it doesn't look compatible with any kind of L plate. Other than that it looks like a good idea. I wonder if it damps the noise at all?

Funnily enough, the noise issue caught me by surprise in that it does in fact add a little noise suppression with the shutter certainly being less audible.

Good idea. Makes the cameras look pretty tough. Would be useful for hiking etc where space and weight is an issue and you don't want to take a bag.

Just thought I would update this thread. Have had mine on for a few months now and have used the camera hard during that time.

Negatives:
Small amounts of dirt stick to the armour and its hard to get off as the armour is sort of "tacky".
Large and bulky.
Restricts the shutter remote from hitting camera.
Restricts the onboard flash from poping up (easily fixed).
Not waterproof.

Positives:
Feels great in MY hand. Very positive grip.
Large and bulky.
Reduces shutter noise.
Prevents scratches when hiking and biking through thick strub.
Peace of mind when leaving exposed outdoors.
Definately absorbs small knocks and bumps.

Summary:
If you use a bag to store your camera whilst out and about then this will pretty much annoy the hell out of you as it is large and bulky and will do little to protect an already protected camera. If however, your camera rarely to never sees the inside of a camera bag OR you take your camera into rough terrain then I HIGHLY recommend this product. It will NOT save the camera from large knocks but it does help protect against bumps and scrapes that any hiker, mountian biker or climber will dish out.
