d70/d70s battery grip WITH HALF PRESS PREFOCUS

Postby jamesw on Wed May 02, 2007 11:16 pm

hey guys,

i know nikon does not make a OEM battery grip. however, there are some examples of battery grips made by 3rd parties to suit the d70/d70s.

does anyone know of an example that ALLOWS half press prefocus. there are some grips on ebay, but these DO NOT allow half press prefocus as they use an optic fibre cable which connects to the infrared sensor on the d70/d70s.

and we all know that when using an infrared remote, you cannot pre focus the shot with a half press of the remote.

There was one available for the D70s which plugged into the cable remote socket. I've also got a feeling that there was a mob in the US who did conversions on the D70 but you had to send your camera over to them, an expensive exercise.

thats the one im looking for, as it allows half press!

anyone got any idea where to buy one? or where they bought one?

i am aware of the conversion that the o/s mobs do/usedtodo, not really interested in it though (may aswell upgrade if i was to spend that much cash on a battery grip!!!)

There are actually some running around the great auction site.

Harbortronics in the US used to do this, but they discontinued the product already: http://www.harbortronics.com/detail.php?id=2

Be wary that when you use the grip with a cable attached to the D70S, you can only use the grip's release button when you switch the camera into IR remote mode. Therefore, you cannot use the primary shutter release from there. Then you have to switch back to normal mode to resume normal operation with the primary shutter release button.

It is a little bit of an annoyance if you switch between positions all the time.

The battery grip I had didn't have this problem. It had the cable that ran from the grip to the remote plug (D70s only), and allowed both primary shutter button and the 'new' one to be used without any changes or hassle what so ever.

Im with Raskill. My D70s Grip works (*Worked) in either orientation without any menu changes.
(*Worked!) It died after a few days of use, I suspect it is the Plug that goes into the remote release on the Nikon rather than the grip.
It gets a bit of a knocking as it sticks out quite a bit. Need to pull it to bits one day and inspect it and possibly change the plug angle to 90 degrees to avoid knocking it again.

*A refund was offered as they cannot get that particular grip anymore, I decided to keep it as the extra battery life is good, and I can have a play at fixing it myself.

I bought it from Ebay. Seller was "Etefore" from HK. (Poon?) http://myworld.ebay.com.au/etefore/
