11th May - new lenses

Postby gooseberry on Mon May 07, 2007 4:42 pm

Pure speculation.... heard that there will be an announcement on 11/5 regarding new lenses. We'll have to wait and see what Friday brings...

thom hogan hinted at it on his website, a lot of people 'in the know' have been hinting at it too. some new fast wides would be nice...

but really only those chaps at nikon know whats going on,

the d3h is also due to be replaced soon (the d2h has actually been discontinued by Nikon Japan)...

or heck, Nikon could 'do a Nikon' and announce nothing except the financials for the last quarter :)

Yeah, heard the speculation that it will be a number of primes.

Hahah...actually Nikon s due to make a press release on May 10th on financials, so this speculation is different from that.

Maybe they will release 34 new P&S in different colours!

really? thats EXACTLY what i've been holding my breath for

although i would like to see what the next generation of nikons actually have to offer (in particular the fps and high iso noise charactaristics), when the next pro body (i suspect a d3) is offered is neither here nor there to me.

having said that, i will not be purchasing another nikon body UNTILL the next line of Nikons is released. if the new line are absolute killers i will jsut splash out on one, and if it isnt i will make a considerable saving on a d200 or d2xs which really gives me the ergonomics and build quality i feel the d70s lacks, with a little bit of room for cropping too (bonus)

my logic is that none of the current lineup will give me much more than the bodys i have currently (1 x d70, 1 x d70s)... i really like the feel of the semi-pro (d200) and pro bodies (d2x/s & d2hs) but i feel they do not meet my needs completely enough for me to justify spending between $1800 and $5000. sure the d200 is nice and the d2xs has the fps i want (at least in 2x crop), but they both have the same if not worse noise issues as my lowly d70!

i guess, right now, my money is better spent on fast glass :D... which gives leaves me a little anxious to hear what lenses nikon is bringing out!

i kinda fell off topic there but meh, i felt like putting my 2c in about all this body lust going on!

Being a new D200 owner, but having had significant playtime with the body type., I am impressed with the different feel and featureset offerred. It's way, way more than a D70 upgrade, and the current forum pricing is way under Au$1800.

It actually cost me less than my D70 body did just three years ago.

But the good word on the streets is that there'll be pink, silver, sky blue and river green D40xs for all next week. Got that at PMA last Saturday.

I know what you are saying - the d200 is certainly a lot of camera, and i don't doubt that.

However, my main gripes (for me - and this is only me - the type of stuff i shoot would be different to most users on here) are high iso noise charactaristics and fps. There are some other things i really like about the d200, and the ergonomics of it are much nicer (feel of the camera, optional vertical grip, dedicated buttons for functions) as is the build quality (i have actually broken my d70s, big crack in it, getting repaired right now on insurance).

And i guess the important thing is how limited i am right now... I am confident of the fact that there are no shots i am taking right now that i wouldnt be able to get on a d200, and vice versa. And i guess that is the core issue.

If it comes to the time when the next nikon DSLR (hopefully a d3 something) comes out and i believe that there is no shot i could not take on my d70 that i couldnt take on the d3, well then i simply wont buy it, and just get a d200.

I hope that this is not the case, as i feel that the iso issues do impact my shooting. At the least they make me carry a bunch of flashes and pocketwizards around, and at the most they make certain shots just unshootable, even with fast glass.

To give you a bit of a background, I do a lot of BMX photography for a few mags and personal pleasure. I have submitted one shot recently into the crit area, and if your at the newsagent and see a copy of BMXPress or 2020 BMx magazine, a few of my photos will be in there too.

Right now, i think my money is better spent on glass. Can't wait for the 10.5 fishto get back in stock...

Sorry for the hijack again :)

I think Gary's colour scheme has been dismissed too eagerly by those reading sarcasm into his, I am lead to believe, informed comments. I think he is alluding to the new range of D40x's with what Nikon is calling Cameraflage. This is the truth.

Pink for the night club photographer
Silver for ex hasselblad owners
Sky blue for Parachuting photographers who will stick the camera on their helmets
River green for duck photo shooters

The cameras actually are all black and the colours are provided by a range of camera armour that is currently available that simply slips on to the camera and also provides some degree of protection. There is also a slip on version for the grey market that is very popular in the navy.

Honest

Just remember... they were rumours, not confirmed. Most companies don't use rumours as an actual statement or deadline for their products.

Just came back from a diving trip over the past few days to find no actual announcement. Guess speculation I had heard out of Japan was just that. But there is currently a lot of hinting and rumours from various sources about an announcement - so I think it'll be fairly soon.

no, definitely less.

opinions tend to be based on fact

rumours... welll... usually based on nothing!

but they make for interesting conversation, and people just seem to love them!
