preparing images for webHi all,
What are the ideal settings for displaying images on the web? I am limiting my images to longest width of 800px but should I save them as JPEG maximum (12) , JPEG high (10)... does reducing the quality to 10 make a difference on the web? I am also limited my resolution to 72dpi, is this correct? Cheers, W00DY Andrew
Nikon D3 and lot's of Nikon stuff!!
if you use the save for web function
at jpeg 61 compression that is pretty optimised for the web jpeg 10 in 'save' as jpeg is high quality is quite a large file compared to save for the web
thanks Wendell, I was hoping to export from Aperture as a JPEG and not use Photoshop, I think Aperture only has ratings, rather than save for web feature. Do you know what the equivalent of 61 compression in Aperture is? Cheers. Andrew

what image size is ideal?
In Aperture using quality setting 8 and limiting to longest side 800 px I get an image size of 228kb. Sounds ok to me but if I have 30 - 40 images in one flash slideshow is that to big? Sorry for all the questions Andrew

best way to export a couple of jpegs using different settings, zoom in on each image and try to determine the threshold where you get to see jpeg artifacts large blocks you cant live with then you
you will notice images with reds are more suseptable to jpeg artefacts so if an image has a lot of red tones in it you may need to save it at a higher quality compression rate to compensate 228kb for 1 jpeg image at 800 pixels on the widest side is pretty big aim for 90 to 120kb mind you in press i used to submit images at 3000 pixels on the largest side 300dpi with a jpeg compression of 9 and i got image file sizes around 900kb that was good enough for press
