On the Horizon
The AW is just a couple of months away, and we've been busy working out how to keep ypu entertained/occupied/whatever over the weekend.
Here's what's lined up this far:
August 4 - Saturday
9:00 am - Ferry Hop on Sydney Harbour.
We'll have more to say on this in the next few days.
10:30 am Portraiture Workshop - Balmain.
Bookings are essential for this, and the day is already almost fully subscribed. There will be a small cost to contribute towards the venue hire.
1:00 pm. The Ferry-Hop people will be joining the portraiture workshop group for light refreshments/lunch in Balmain, before continuing their trek around the harbour.
7:00 pm Presentation Dinner.
This is where the party really gets going. Prizes will be awarded for such things as the AW challenge (yes, we already have the theme in mind) as well as for a few other notable achievements.
I also expect to have a few freebies and surprises available for those in attendance, so please keep this night free.
We expect to have exclusive use of a small-ish restaurant on the inner north shore, and the cost should be around the $40 mark. We're just waiting on confirmation of the final details.
Because the venue is small, we'll be restricting numbers.
August 5 - Sunday
There will be a family picnic, recovery session, and swapmeet. If you have some stuff you want to offload - this may be the chance. if you just want to get out with the family and chill ... this may be the chance. Or if you want to get out to somewhere pretty and make some images ... yep, this will be your chance.
More details to come as we put everything to bed over the next few days ...
Accommodation for interstate visitors
We can assist in this realm too, with a really great Sydney experience for you.
Challenge 15: Triptych
The theme for Challenge 15 is Triptych. A triptych is described in Wikipedia as:
is a work of art (usually a panel painting) which is divided into three sections
In this challenge entrants must submit an image comprising of three separate images of a similar BUT ANY theme. Thats right, beyond requiring a triptych this challenge is OPEN.
As well as submitting the triptych you must submit the three original images to a separate gallery so that their validity can be assessed (usual EXIF and PP rules will apply to the individual images).. All component images must be taken in the time frame of the challenge. You may frame the triptych in anyway you feel appropriate for the images.
More details on submission procedures will follow once the gallery is open, just ensure:
*You keep the component images
*The EXIF is intact on the component images
*The date is set correctly in you camera
DATES:
Image valid: NOW (The time of this post)
Gallery closes, voting opens: Monday may 28th
Voting closes: June 4th
PRIZES!
1st place: A RENOWNED film camera
2nd place: A Wolf Eyes Sniper tactical torch. Rechargeable worth $110.00
Any questions don't hesitate to post them, besides allowances for the Triptych theme all the normal RULES apply.

I went to the challenge gallery and logged in, but there is no option to upload an image like there usually is.
Also, I seem to have the option of editing the title of the gallery, which I'm sure I'm not supposed to have.

I have tried to upload my image 4 times and each time, after 'processing' for about 5 minutes, I get a message which says:
Processing status...
No Images Uploaded!
With the button "Dismiss" the only option available.
Being the technically illiterate person I am, I presume I am missing something obvious, but it seems like a simple process. The file is jpg.
Please help????
This is being done at work with appropriately fast connection speeds.
Cheers
Regards, Patrick

Patrick,
What's the size of the file(s) you're trying to upload? Just a thought.

Gary, the file size is a bit over 8mb (the rules state no size restrictions).
I just finished uploading the individual components which were 1.7 - 2.2 mb which worked (and hopefully I have successfully hidden the photos, etc).
Is the file too big?
Thanks for your help.

I am guessing so! Check with Scott, but I doubt his gallery software accepts that. Lets see, 30 entries of 8mb = 240mb worth of download to view all entries, some ISP plans would be blown on one viewing! Patrick, we don't want people dowloading your entry and using it on billboards

Thanks Glen,
This is a really silly question - I don't have any image software here at work (e.g., Photoshop, etc.). Is there a way I can downsize the image easily without excessively degrading it? I guess I could use, ahem, Paint, but I don't know if that is going to wreck it too much.
Cheers

Patrick - Wait until you get home?
You have until Monday to upload.
Or download a free resizing program - pixresizer or something. There are heaps of them.

Thanks Kris, I think I will manage the resizing myself at home rather than try one of the online versions. I should mention we use Unwired at home for our internet access - dial up speed for broadband prices! Hence, I will probably need to burn to disk and upload from work on Monday.
Is there a maximum file size/pixel dimension size I should be targeting?
Should I take down my component images until I upload the main pic?
Thanks for your help, everyone.
Can you tell I am new to this?

Patrick, I am 100% with Chris, it is no problem to resize without a perceptible loss of quality on screen, but needs the right program, just wait till you get home

So many questions.
Hard to answer re: size without knowing exactly what sort of triptych you've got and we're not supposed to talk about our images.
Consider that most people won't be able to see the whole triptych at once if it is wider than 1200 pixels. That said, you might lose some impact if you make it too small. A compromise might be say 2000 pixels on the long side, but it's really up to you.
No need for your component images to be bigger than 800 pixels on the long side. They are really only there for exif data anyway.

Thanks for all the answers
The component images were all uploaded, albeit probably bigger than they need to be (in terms of pixel dimensions).
I will downsize the triptych (such a silly word) to a more managable size.
Can I assume pics have to be posted COB on Monday or some other pre-determined time?
Cheers and thanks again for the guidance of an imbecile!

Hi Keith... (and others)
It is only important that EXIF is intact on the component images uploaded into the other gallery, EXIF is not important on the Tryptich...

The component pics are only for exif ref, so the voting will only apply to the final combination pic

Speaking of voting, has anyone else had problems with it?
After I give the score to my top 5 and I click on the Vote button I get a message saying that I don't have the privileges to go into that directory.

Just tried again, I got the same result. This is the actual message:
Attention!
The album or photo that you were attempting to view either does not exist, or requires user privileges that you do not posess.
This happens as soon as I press the vote button and it takes me out to the page with all the challenges.

I found it very hard to vote on this one as all the images are of such a high standard (well done to all who entered)
I'm not a fan of the voting system because I find it difficult to pick just 5 and sort them into order against each other
I'd prefer to give all entries a score out of 10 that way I would score the photo on its own merits with regard to the challenge topic not on its appeal in relation to the other entries
so that if I end up with 2x10s 3x8s 11x5s etc. it will show that some shots are equal in my eye
then the photos could be ranked on their average score (total score divided by number of votes)

Keith, Jonesy, Thanx for your feelings on the voting. We do look at this aspect frequently because we know that the voting system is not perfect and we're constantly looking for members' thoughts and suggestions on this aspect.

I have never been able to successfully record a vote when I use firefox, but it works every time if I use IE
Voting: I undertsand the problems with the voting system and what you've asked for is the way it usefd to be Keith. Problem is that if we could score each photo 1 to 10 then it's very easy to skew the voting eg if a few people vote 10 for 1 image and 1 for all the others that pushes that image to the top even if a lot of others vote for other images. Or to put it differently, I may be very tough and give 10's rarely with my median score at 3 or 4. Another may be very generous and give 10's a lot. Mathematically 1 of those generous people has nearly twice the impact on the result as one of the tough people. At the end of the day the current system is about forcing you to rank the images so we all indicate our preferred order. One possibility is for you to score on a scale of 1 to 10 on paper then assemble the images into order and rank accordingly. Hope that gives some insight into why we have the current imperfect system.

Keith, as stated voting is always open for discussion for improvements. Further to what Gary & Peter said, a little bit of history is that we had that system, but on challenges which attracted a lot of entries people complained it was very onerous and time consuming on the voters.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys judge a triptyc? Do you look at the whole thing as one photo or do you think that each element of the tripyc should stand up as a good photo on its own? or both?

True, when we had the 1 to 10 system and had a two part challenge you'd have 100 odd photos to grade (I know some are use to that on dpchallenge) but it took so long some people wouldn't vote at all.

Phillip,
I was going to provide an answer regarding my opinion, but I think it perhaps best to defer discussing voting techniques until after the voting period ends. I would not want to influence anyone (assuming my opinion was capable of influencing anyone ).
Cheers

That's probably wise ... just in case ...
That's not to say that Phillip's question isn't a good one - it is actually a very good one, and one that I had not thought to open discussion on.
