Sigma Glasshey all looking at getting a zoom and have been tossing up between a few, i have been looking into the sigma 50-150 f2.8 and the sigma 70-200 f2.8 macro. am also considering a nikon 80-200 f2.8 but not sure im too keen on the crop on DSLR. the macro looks nice seeing you get the traditional focal length on a digi lens. anyway if anyone has any feedback or first hand experience concerning sharpness, contrast etc with either of these lenses it would be much appreciated. have looked at a few reviews and people seem to be fairly positve about these lenses
Re: Sigma Glassyo dave,
do you want 35mm FF equiv to 80-200? we've talked about 1.5 crops before, so it's not like you dont understand that... i reckon the 50-150 has a good focal length (75-225), is the price good? ive heard from a few diff sources taht its pretty well regarded, good weight... the nikon 80-200 2.8 is supposed to be awesome... few guys on here use it eh body: nikon d200, d70s, f4s, f601.
lens:nikon 35-70mm f2.8, 70-300mm f4-5.6, 10.5mm f2.8, 20mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8. flash: nikon sb600, sunpak 383 (x1), sunpak 555 (x4), pocketwizard plus II (x4) jamesdwade.com dishonourclothing.com
Yo jimmy! yeah man the price for the 50-150 is very good, around $750 US (including ship) and considering i never really shoot above about 125mm the 200mm would be luxury, still very tempting!! and regarding the nikon i just feel that with the 1.5x crop the bottom end focal length will just be too long, which is dissapointing because itss a great piece of glass. when will nikon catch up on DSLR specific glass hmmm?
i was going to say, the 80-200 and 70-200 would kind of be a bit long, the 50-150 is more suited to DX crop. to brag about ur gera, go to profiel and change your signature, you un-geek. price is good on the 50-150 eh! ... saving my pennies for a d200 nigs body: nikon d200, d70s, f4s, f601.

Hi David,
I don't have any experience with the Sigma lenses but I have a 2nd hand 80-200 Nikon and I LOVE it!! You are more than welcome to have a play with it yourself the next time we are in Adelaide if you like. I'm not sure if Fozzie has one - has has many lenses. Perhaps you could come to a mini meet and check it out. Cheers, Lee Nikon D7000
Hi Marvin,
1- I do not have the 80-200, but do have a similar lens 70-200VR 2- Only Sigma I do have is a 150mm f/2.8 macro plus TC1.4 EX DG 3- So when are you going to be in Adelaide for a Mini Meet . Thought I would put you on the spot
foozie
I had a 70-200 but sold it for the VR version by Nikon. That being said, the Sigma and Nikon performed about the same in tests done on this site. If I recall the Sigma may have been slightly sharper at some focal length/apertures.
That being said, the Nikon was GREAT! But, I sold that and bought a Sigma again (120-300mm). Some people have had QC issues with Sigma lenses, but I have been fortunate, and all three Sigma lenses (24-70mm F/2.8, 70-200mm F/2.8 & the 120-300mm F/2.8 ) have been sharp and performed really well. The 80-200 Nikon has a good reputation also, besically as sharp as a 70-200VR with the VR off. At the end of the day, a lot depends on knowing your lenses, knowing thier sweet spots and having the skills needed to use them. Good luck! 2x D700, 2x D2h, lenses, speedlights, studio, pelican cases, tripods, monopods, patridges, pear trees etc etc

hey raskill, every sigma lens i have owned has been great, and that goes for when i was shooting on the pentax platform as well, looks like ive got a few hours lined up at work this week so think im going to drop some gorrillas on glass next week hopefully! i am leaning towards the 50-150 so if i end up getting it ill post some test shots when i get it. actually whichever glass i get ill post some shots, i have been hanging for long(er) glass in my kit!!
Hi David,
i have the sigma 70-200 (pre-macro version though) that you are welcome to try at the afore mentioned mini-meet (whenever that may be). Good luck with the decision making!
