tripod?

Hi Guys,

I've got a tristar tripod which cost me about $40 some time ago for my little Nikon 775, and it works great. However the D70 seems a bit heavy for it and tends to tilt the entire tripod forward (the top adjusting handle cant be tightened enough to support it)

So, i think its a bit too on the weak side to hold the D70 nicely..

Can anyone recommend a good one for the D70 for all situations??

Manfrotto - seems to the the preferred choice of many. It gets into a whole complicated field of legs and heads, 3 section or 4, aluminium or carbon fiber.

Set a budget, and find the best combination for your shooting needs that fits that budget.

Perhaps my recommendation is not suitable for your budget, if you're thinking more in the near future, you might end up buying two or three tripods and number of accessories.
I did buy five tripods since I had my F90x (1991) and many quick released plate (QR), and they turned into surpluses, gave to friends and relatives after. Especially, you may lust some heavy and long lenses after.
Need a sturdy tripod, I went with the Gitzo 1325. US$507.00 and the Markin 20 ballhead at last, also looking for the Manfrotto 440 or 441 + the new RRS BH-55 Pro (Ballhead) as well.
Do more research and you'll get what you want to achieve.

Manfrotto is the word, but you should be able to pick up something usable for around $250 - $300 in total. That's tripod and head. Look aroun, and check out the Manfrotto and Vanbar sites back to back so that you can get an idea of cost/features.

I had a look at a few Manfrotto's today, I like the 190Pro but then what ballhead do I get

Maybe I might just bite the bullet and get the ballhead and 1325 as recommend by birddog (he hasnt been wrong yet!)

Price looks OK to me, but the auction is just started, you don't know till the end.
If you can wait until the end of the month, try my Gitzo 1325 + Markin 20 ballhead first and you'll have your own idea. The G1325 is carbon fiber and it's light when travel.
Nothing goes wrong with Gitzo's product anyway, please note the Gitzo 1376 ballhead new is US$214.00 at B&H and Adorama

Why not? depend on what lens you have, not the top of the line tripod and head but if he want to sell at that price, go for it.

Sorry that link is not for the Gitzo, as I knew it's an old product, when you buy a second hand tripod + head, please make sure you have your camera with you, mount it on and try to play around with it a bit, to see is it smooth when panning, secondly, check to see if there's any cracked (hair line), extend all the sections of the tripod. Especially the product made of magnesium.
Who know, you may score a great bargain!!!

Have a look at Manfrotto grip action heads. I tend to like them for the very quick and easy adjustments. However they're not exactly "precise" for panorama stitching work. For night shots and stuff - holding the postion still, they'd be ideal IMHO.

You will need some types of support for your cam to shoot fireworks at Darling Harbour and Opera House soon. New Year Eve and Australia Day 05.
I never used the kit lens to shoot those events, perhaps someone in this forum did.

Carbon fibre tripods are very light and very expensive!
A good tripod should have some reasonable weight in order to hold camera and long lenses and possibly long exposures, with minimal vibration. In the field weight and sturdy legs are also neccessary to combat movement from wind - particularly on spongy or long grass.
Lightweight tripods are sold to amateurs, but are of limited use, particularly when todays long focal length lenses are in use.

I am only a new owner but I bought the MF 190Pro. I like it, it is stable and the best thing is it is flexible, ie; can put one leg against a wall, can put arm sideways for macro worlk low and away from the legs, plus other combinations.

I got the 486 RC2 ball head with it. I think its a good combination but again I am only new to this, the rest of the forum has a lot more experience in Nikon related gear. All up cost was $300, $210 for tripod and $90 for Ball head.

Yep, saw the MF grip action but that thought came to my head also.. I think id rather a good strong ball head.

The MF190Pro is also what I looked at, ill make my decision in the next few days and see what I think..

I read that link and I do agree.. I'm the type of the person to buy the rolls royce once, and once only so I dont need to keep upgrading/spending.

That said, im going for a Markins M20 and Gitzo G1228 CF tripod

Now just to find the cheapest price...

Markin ballhead only sells thru Nikonian.org, I don't know why, they ship from Europe by post, good service, I got mine within 10 days of ordering. They keep you posted with the shipping.
Perhaps you can find Gitzo tripod anywhere, I bought mine from RRS cos I ordered one of their BH-55 Pro as well (Back-ordered 4-6 weeks). Search and looking around, you may find something that interested.
