Canon & Laptops

A friend of mine has a Canon EOS 400D and wants to direct connect it to his laptop so when he takes a shot (mostly jewelery) he can review it on a his laptop screen straight away. What software/hardware does he need to do this.

I seen Sheepie do this with a D200 and a laptop at one of the portrait workshops.

Can't speak definitively on the 400D because I've never had one but when I got my 350D there was software included on the disk you get with the camera that allows basic tethered shooting functions via the camera's usb cable. I think its called Canon EOS Utility or something like that.

There are some commercially available alternatives as well but I haven't had experience with them.

Canon provide an application with all their cameras to allow this. I have used it a number of times, and it is really handy. My only complaint is that you can't do bulb exposures from it.

It used to be called Remote Capture i think, but it is now part of the EOS Utility software that came with the camera.

No other software is needed at all!

I'm guessing Nikon Camera Control Pro. You can download a trial version from the Nikon website.

There is also a product called ToneUp (http://www.toneupstudio.com/) that will fire the shutter on most cameras.
It will only fire the shutter though. You can't control aperture, shutter speed etc.

Sheepie may also have been using Nikon Capture 4. That reputedly allowed remote camera operation. It is no longer available though. It was replaced by two products: Camera Control Pro & Capture NX.
