does anyone know where i can get a couple of stands to hold an sb800

and a stand with a boom arm

anyone know where to get a medium 11 inch softbox with a speedrign attachment that fits a sb800?

i modded one before but i lost it

Hi Wendell,

any light stand, with an umbrella bracket on top, add a hotshoe bracket.

For the softbox, you can mount a regular speed ring to a hama flat plate, and mount an SB29 to the back.

dont have time right now, but search my posts, I have some sample set up pics.

One has the photoflex XS softboxes, mounted on manfrotto "nano" stands.

I have the bogen / manfrotto 3373 lightstand for my 580ex with a multiclamp and 43" umbrella. (the 3373 Dave recommends in strobist.com)

I got it for its compactibility. You can get a heavier duty one (air cushioned etc) but it will be bulkier to carry (unless this isnt an issue). If all you are putting on it is a speedlight, something like the 3373 is ideal.

I got this stand and stuff from B&H. (stand is roughly $70 AUD w/o shipping)

Boom arm stand would be helpful for clamshell portraits, I dont get enough clearance from the brollie to really attempt this. (bends back onto the stand when angled low from up high)

Photoflex also comes to mind for shoe-mounted flash softboxes.

I'd recommend looking at the Manfrotto 305 stacker stand. It is quite compact (folds flat) and raises higher/is more sturdy than the Nano. If you have more than 1 they clip together to make them easier to carry.

currentyl i just use my mini benro tripod and kb-0 ballhead with attachment to hold my 2nd flash but it just takes up too much floorspace re legs
and its pretty heavy compared to just an ordinary light stand so thats why im investigating other options

anyone know where i can get this stuff over the counter

ive been to all studio places

balltronics, pioneer, vanbar, dragon image, l&p, fotoreisol none have these items should i be looking elsewhere?

how much reach do you need from a boom? and weight?

if light weight, and only about 60cm, the manfrotto flash bracket's base can clamp over a light stand, and give you the reach up to about (if thats not enough reach, you can buy extension arms, or the adjustable "magic arm" to add to the end of the flash bracket)

I think calumet also have lots of rebranded stuff, usually exactly the same, for about 60% price.

for a boom (if only for an SB800), what about a cheap monopod, clamped unto somehting with 1 or 2 superclamps? perhaps onto a tripod, bookshelf, pipe, whatever you can.

there are also flexi arm versions of extensions, which are nice and adjustable.

im in no rush but i would like the setup as soon as i can get my head around it

the boom will only have to support an sb800 nothing

at least want 1x 20 inch softbox on one of the stands


sydney only has strobe stuff nothign for speedlights i checked

the photoflex extra small softboxes are very lightweight, they are designed for non hot lmps, and are made of very light vinyl (feels plasticy, but it light, which matters if on camera), you can get white or silver, but white is very soft (love it).
