B+W FiltersDoes anyone here use them ?
i have always used Hoya filters and my current one has just busted by a rock smashing into it while mounted to my 70-200mmVR so am looking for a new one and considering other brands aswell. i found a place that has them reasonably priced on ebay. these are the ones i'm looking at. CPL: B+W 77mm MRC SLIM Circular Polarizer Filter: $160AUD OR B+W 77mm MRC Circular Polarizer Glass Filter F-PRO: $140AUD i have read that the slim ones can minimise vignetting for wider angle lens' but you need to use a push on lens cap as the standard clip ons cannot fit on the slim filter version. does anyone have the slim version who can give some feedback ? i have never been a UV filter believer but after todays episode i have decided to cop the potential ghosting and always have a filter on the lens. so the one i am looking at is this one: B+W 77mm MRC UV 010 Filter F-PRO Multi-Coated Alloy: $63AUD likewise, does anyone have any experience with this filter or can recommend any other UV filter ? not looking to get into the whole should you or shouldn't you have a UV filter debate. just looking for anyones experience with these particualr ones and if they had some recommendations of any other high quality CPL's in particular. (also if anyone knows somewhere with better pricing that would be nice to !) thanks EM1 l 7.5 l 12-40 l 14 l 17 l 25 l 45 l 60 l 75 l AW1 l V3
Re: B+W FiltersI use the exact UV filter on all my lenses, and have the Slim MRC Kaisserman (sp?) CPL, i cant tell you if it reduces vignetting as i never used the 'non-Slim' to compare but can attest to B+W being quality and that the slim is infact to slim to put the standard cap on, the lens i use the slim uv filter on i simply keep my hood on so dont worry about the cap and i dont leave the CPL on the lens so no need to worry about the cap, you do get caps with the filters though, my suggestion get some pouches to house them, i purchased some B+W soft pouches, $5 USD from B&H from memory.
One thing to note though watch out for ebay filters as some have been known to be fakes, i purchased mine from maxsaver which is now http://hvStar.com ,best prices i found.
thanks. thats the exact place i will be buying from. good to hear they are reliable.
so you use that same UV filter ? are you happy with it ? any IQ or ghosting issues ? (what lens btw?) with regard to the pouches, i assume they dont come with a soft pouch, just the hard case ? i was going to get a lowepro filter pouch that can hold 6 filters. any experience with it ? Filters have been on all these lenses when i have owned them Lenses: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM As far as loss of IQ i did some initial tests when i got them and couldnt tell with and without (i had someone else take the shots to remove bias) They only come with the hard cases and the B+W filter cap. Not sure about the lowepro filter pouch, the one i got was this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/2 ... Pouch.html as far as being happy, its one of those debates that is never ending i feel, some people agree some dont its all personal preference really, me i wont go without but thats me.
Re: B+W Filters
You need to be going pretty wide to notice any vignetting with the 'regular' filters. On a 20D + 10-22, you only really to notice it up to ~13mm, and even then it's not really very bad. I've only really heard of ghosting being a problem with cheap, lower quality filters. I've certainly never run into any of those problems with any of my B+W's.
Re: B+W Filters
My only observation on this is that whatever filter you buy, I'm sure that it's a lot cheaper than any repairs your 70-200 VR might have had to otherwise endure. g.
